Alcohol and Diabetes

Does anyone out there with type 1.5 still drink cocktails or did you all give it up? I hear mixed things on it. Is it most important to watch my eating and exercise and a couple cocktails here and there are fine or not?

A couple of cocktails here and there are fine... vodka seems to have very little impact on BS, unless of course you mix w/ oj or something... I drink often (socially) and find very little problems...

You just need to understand how alcohol affects you and treat accordingly. I bolus for carbs and drop my basals for the later effects of my liver not releasing sugar.

It depends on what is in the cocktails. Liqueurs, which are loaded with sugar, are typical ingredients. If the cocktail tastes sweet, it will push your blood sugar up. A shot of liqueur (30mls) contains about 2 teaspoons of sugar, so you can bolus for it. But it is tricky . I normally drink Scotch or Bourbon on the rocks, and it doesn't affect blood sugar at all.

"Lite" beer usually contains about 5 grams of carbs...so I do allow myself beer. Like anything else, moderation is the key. Sweet drinks are out for me. I've tried lo-carb drink mixes but they taste yucky...many wines are fine too.

i am quite attached to 4C Totally Light zero carb drink mixes.

fortunately i know a secret Australian location where i can buy them!!!

the "fruit punch" tastes just like "Hawaiian Punch"! Ah memories of my youth. The pink lemonade also tastes just like pink lemonade! The Cranberry Pomegranate flavor is almost like real cranberry juice.
