progress on the alkaline diet

its 17 weeks since i started to eat a diet that is mostly raw and mostly alkalizing in nature.

some of you may recall i posted about my success at the 6 week stage. by week 5 i had been able to stop taking external insulin completely, after constantly monitoring my blood sugars throughout.

at week 15 i had bloods drawn up as part of my bi-annual checkup with my family doctor. he was amazed when i told him about my new healthy regimen.

the blood results came back
HbA1c 5.2% (down from a steady 5.6 to 5.8 over the last 2 years)
Cholesterol 3.8 (down from a steady 4.1 to 4.4 over last 2 years)
kidneys, liver and thyroid are functioning normally
fasting blood sugars are consistently around the 5mmols regions
and i still require no insulin or prescribed meds at all.

what i have added to my regimen is some supplements that support the pancreas.

Chromium Picolinate
Alpha Lipoic Acid
and
vitamin D3

along with the bicarbonate of soda which helps to alkalize the body as well.

my doctor dictated a letter to the diabetologist telling him it was 'nothing short of a miracle!'

amazing huh??

my body weight has reduced by almost a stone (although that wasnt my initial goal!) i now weigh a healthy 9st8lbs.

oh! and during my recent eye checks there are no signs of diabetes there either.

i'm having a good week!

Hi Shabbie - welcome back and so good to hear about your results.
I take Alkana N to alkanise my bloods as well ... was put on it virtually straight away from Naturopath when learnt I had diabetes.... I was'nt so diligent about it till a few weeks ago but was told to take 3/4 tspn first thing in morning and last thing at night.

That's impressive! Could you tell us more about what you actually eat, your menu for a day, for example?

thanks to odar, davef and abra

abra, my meals vary quiite a bit depending on what i fancy, but heres a rough guide.

breakfast today
1 grapefruit
1 pint of filtered/ionised water with a scoop of powdered supergreens added to it.
then an hour later i had a steamed medley of veggie goodness, including broccoli, red onion, garlic, sweet bell pepper, frozen soy beans, miso, and juiced half a lemon. topped with sunflower seeds for extra crunch. it was yummy!

snack
1 banana
cup of miso

lunch
hummous
spinach/tomatoe/cucumber/grated raw sweet potaoe and lemon juice

snack
30 grams carbs of organic chocolate

dinner
we ate out tonight so i had a big salad with tuna and olives and 3 baby new potatoes

its not the low carb/no carb i started out on, but its around 80% alklaine/alkalizing in nature

and most of all i enjoy my menu!

i forgot to mention that sometimes i have green smoothies for my morning meal, but since the weather turned chilly and damp i am eating salads with steamed veggies instead.
and on the days i am actively working with my builder husband i will enjoy a cup of brown rice with breakfast too.

Thanks for the detail, Sharon. Where does your protein come from? Do you just drink bicarbonate of soda dissolved in water? As a person who's eating very low carb right now, I'm petty fascinated by the idea of being able to eat all those vegetables.

a raw athlete called tim vanorden eats a strict raw vegan diet.
he says that proteins are readily available in the form of amino acids in our fruits and veggies when they are consumed raw.

personally i still take the odd egg and chickpeas or soya beans or tofu, in part because of the protein but also because i enjoy them and they add a new texture to my plate.

the bicarb i take at bedtime each night.
half a teaspoon in a glass of water, swishing it around the mouth before swallowing.
it does taste salty/vile :sicksmiley: but it does work with the pH levels.
hubby and i both noticed results after around 10 days.

my oral pH level this morning was 6.75. when i first started it was only 5.0, so i was fairly acidic.

Thanks, Sharon. I'm going to try the bicarb, just as I've tried every other (reasonable) suggestion here, to see if it helps with DP. I don't see why it would, but then, I don't see why I have DP anyway, and there's nothing to lose.

Hi all-
I don't eat anywhere near this kind of diet-but when I was reading through this what suck out to me was the conversation about bicarb. I have had many different labs done as my bicarb was low (ranging from 13-16, I think normal is 22 and up). Nothing they are testing is coming up abnormal but the bicarb. (they have tested everything from kidney function, ketones, adrenal function etc.. also, my sugars are in the ok range-A1c is 6.1)
For now, my doc is doing nothing about my bicarb....
Have any of you had experience with this bicarb thing? Suggestions?

while i was never tested for bicarb deficiencies, i have most definately found that taking bicarb at bedtime is a sure way to increase those levels and ultimately adjust tha pH levels in my body, and my husband who is non-D takes bicarb each night. we have both experienced a rise in pH levels. mine were 5.0 and hubbys were 5.5. (saliva)

now we are both around 6.5 and 6.75.

my therapist recommends bicarb to his clients regardless of their illness after testing their pH levels. most of them start out around 5.0.

clients that have suffered fibromyalgia and arthritis have seen signifcant improvement in thier symptoms after just a 3 weeks takign bicarb.

i am of the opinion that diabetes for me was a symptom of over acidity in my body.

again i am not inferring that i am 'cured' but i can now eat meals containing proper carb levels and still see near perfect blood sugar levels afterwards.

hope that helps
