GAD65 and IA2

Hi, I am new to the forums. I found this website as I was looking for info on LADA.

Background: I have a daughter that has Type 1 Diabetes (for many years) and I was just diagnosed with "Type 2" and put on Metformin. I do not have anyone in our family with Type 2, but do have a paternal uncle who had Type 1 (and of course my daughter). About 5 years ago my family participated in a Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) study of "autoimmunity" during our visits to Childrens Hospital. My results were positive for both GAD65 and IA2 markers. Does this mean I actually have Type 1.5 or could I still have Type 2?

Thank you to any responses - and I will keep researching.

I am only pre-diabetic, and can only give comments on what I've heard and read so far. According to most people on this forum who has 1.5 or LADA, when you test positive for GAD and IA2, the chance that you have LADA is pretty good.

The medication will work for now, but if your blood sugar can not be maintained even with the medication, the chances are unfortunately good that you have LADA.

But hopefully one of the people who actually have been diagnosed with LADA will be able to give you some more info.

Good luck!

I was also initially diagnosed as Type 2 a decade ago and only last year reclassified as LADA, in part due to a positive GAD65 test. However, unlike other "Type 1"-like folks, I've still only been on metformin this whole time (and just recently got my second 6.0 A1c in a row). So it can look very similar and for some could even be treated similarly. Other indicators that might be tested for include c-peptide (high-normal would more likely indicate IR of Type 2, rather than some level insulin deficiency). Low BMI could also be an indicator (although there's cross over in both types).

Warren.

Hello momof3 and welcome to DF! Follow the links in my signature to learn more about LADA/T1.5 and if necessary, print them out for your Dr. Many GPs refuse to accept that an adult can be T1/1.5 since its been mislabeled as "Juvenile" diabetes.

Sigh, it depends on who you ask!

I am categorized as Type 2 with antibodies, by my Endo. BS. I know what I know. I was barely and briefly, into the "obese" range as measured by BMI, just prior to diagnosis and precipitous weight loss, I was DKA at diagnosis, had pre-existing Hashimoto's thyroid disease (a risk factor for Type 1 or 1.5, same GAD antibodies) ... but she insists I am a Type 2, and only prescribes oral meds. I have told her it is metformin only, then insulin, for me!

So ... pick your endo well ... this seems to be the local Endo culture, though, as far as I can tell.

thanks

This give me more to think about - thanks. Well, I have been on Thyroid replacement starting about a year after my Type 1 daughter was born, about 13 years now). Maybe the GAD marker is picking up the assault on my thyroid instead? I don't know.

I just know that I am overweight (but losing), but body shape more of a pear that an apple. So, it would probably be hard to convince a doc that is could be Type 1.5 since I am overweight. I guess I will bring these results in as well (unless the markers can reverse to negative????)

Is there anyone who can point me to an area that list Endo's that they like on the forums? I am in Washington State (North of Seattle).

Thanks again!
