I as given the choice of Lantus vs Levemir, and chose levemir myself. I am aware its only an 18 hour insulin.

With my lifestyle, its more convenient to be on Levermir because of the Pen. I am sure many people prefer needles, but until its necessary, its not for me.

plus, with my lifestyle, 18 hours coverage is working so far, with bolus's to help. in the evening.

thank you for the concern though!

I have some kind of strange MODY which is beautifully controlled on two shots a day of Ultralente <sigh>

I cannot make Lantus work. The dose that controls my daytime fastings level I hypo at night. Lowering the day dose and I end up with a high morning number. Plus, UL peaked in a way that covered a reasonable dose of carbs in my lunch and a low carb dinner, but with Lantus I end up spiking badly even with a low carb lunch.

Levemir was much more like the UL and did a good job on my blood sugar control. I would need a small night shot as I do with UL. However, I had a problem of developing high blood pressure when I used it which worried my doctor. I will probably have to use it when my stash of UL runs out.

I hear they're discontinuing Ultralente.

Have you tried splitting Lantus? The high blood pressure is a strange reaction. My last endo appt. my blood pressure was good after being on Levemir for 2.5 weeks.

The other possibility is instead of using a long acting insulin, why not try just using a fast acting insulin to cover carbs at mealtime and prevent those spikes?

Stella,

They have discontinued Ultralente. I was able to find a local druggist who had a fridge full and bought up quite a few vials, which since I use a small dose should last me a while. Then I'll have to deal with making the change.,

My endo prescribed humalog for me to try with meals, but I am having trouble making it work because I do get a late 2nd phase response that kicks in and sends me low at 3 hours at doses which don't do much of anything to improve the 1 and 2 hour readings. So I haven't been able to ramp up the dose which would control the first two hours because I'd end up in the 60s at 3!

This is not entirely bad news. It's nice to HAVE a second phase response again. I think I have gotten some kind of "beta cell rest" from the Ultralente, and the near normal numbers I've been maintaining with it.

I don't know what to think of the blood pressure reaction. When the UL runs out I'll have to work out how to use the Levemir. But for now I'm just glad I have a fridge full of the UL!

Are you mixing the Levemir and Novolog?
I have just started on Levemir, this week, and am mixing it with Humalog. (Yes I know it is not "redomended" that you mix it, but I have been mixing with Ultralente, also not recomended, for 20 years)

HI All,
newly diagnosed Type 1.5, levemir 15units bedtime, Novolog 6 units each meal, MetforminXR500mg before dinner AND FRUSTRATIONS UNLIMITED!!!
I'm having difficult time with my sugar controls going crazy!! One day the same food I eat gives me post 2hours 159 and second day same exact food gives me post 2 hours 202!!!
I'm struggling a lot to get this straightened out..
I have noticed I have no coverage for basal in the evenings after 5pm. Is it true that Levemir covers about 15 hours only?
Give me some moral support guys, I'm losing it.
