Red face HI, new here, maybe type 1.5

Hi guy's, I am new here. great forum. I think I maybe type 1.5. My endo is not real sure where to put me either. About 6 weeks ago after a race( i run ultra distances) I felt really crummy. and i really didn't do as well as I could have at that race.I had a an old accucheck from my last pregancy( gd) I took a finger stick and it was 216! Very suprising. I had lost a few pounds over a few months but other than that, no huge red flags. I don't believe I am type 1 because I have never had an episode of dka, and I don't think I am type 2 because I am VERY fit. My endo put me on lantus 5 and humalog to cover meals. For the first few weeks that worked great felt very good, no lows. Now I think I am honeymooning. Can A type 1.5 honeymoon? I really don't even need the lantus, I am having really normal bs. How long do you think it will last? Also Is there anyone else outthere who runs really far? Thanks guys looking forward to your responces. Iam an emergency room nurse but this is all new territory for me=)..... claire

Welcome aboard. Sorry about the diagnosis, join the crowd!

Officially, there is no type 1.5. There is a type 1 LADA, which I believe is adult onset type 1. I have this type myself and I went through a honeymoon period where my pancreas was still creating some insulin. Eventually, like all honeymoons, it came to an end. Honeymoon periods last different lengths of times for different people. It's hard to even tell how long one lasts since your insulin requirements change during the process.

I'm guessing that if you are on Lantus and it's not causing you to go low, then it's helping. And if your endo has you taking Humalog before meals, they probabably suspect you are a type 1. There is a specific blood test they can perform to verify type 1 vs. type 2 and it is important since treatment differs.

Anyhow, once again, welcome aboard and good luck...

Claire..........You don't mention how old you are, but I was dx'd a type 1 at the age of 40. I never had DKA and I am very slim myself. The only way to determine whether you are a type 1 or 2 is by having a C-peptide test done. The C-peptide determins how much insulin, if any, your body is producing. At the time of diagnosis three years ago, my pancreas was producing about 3% insulin. I was doing injections up until December when I went on the pump. Let me also mention that I have a strong family history of type 1 in my family. I just never thought I'd end up with it that late in life.

Welcome Claire...

I know it was kind of a blow finding out that you have this health issue, but it's better to know and take care of it, then pretend it's not happening and let damage possibly be done. With education, management, and support (this forum ), things will get easier each day.

Please feel free to stop by anytime and post

My insulin requirements have dropped as well. I have read that LADA's can honeymoon indefinitely though to do this you have to run low most of the time to so the beta cells don't "attract attention" from the antibodies by throwing out insulin of their own. Type 2's can also have partial of full remission after going on insulin. To tell which you are you would need a c-peptide or an anti-GAD antibody test. A positive c-peptide would show type 2 a positive anti-GAD antibody test would show type 1.

THanks Guys, It really hasn't been bad. I am producing some insulin I beleive. I haven't had a c peptide drawn yet. I am on a very low dose of lantus (5) and I really only occaisonally need the humalog to cover. But like I said before I think I am honeymooning. With out the lantus I am still pretty normal, for the moment. I am by nature a pretty postive person, I know that It could be a lot worse. OH and I am 29 years old.

21 year old hear and in the same boat that you are in. I had a few hypos as a kid and about a year ago i started to lose weight. I was all my life a very fit person and then 2 months ago i had my wisdom teeth out and i felt horrible and was diagnosed with type 1. I think i may be a type 1.5, but im not sure its only 2 months down the road.

Im on 10 units of lantus and an ocational 1 unit of humalog. the rigimin works for me.

T1.5 and honeymoons

Yes, T1.5s do have a honeymoon period, I guess how long it lasts varies person to person. I was misdiagnosed T2 2 years ago, diagnosed T1 (LADA) 18 months back on the basis of antibody tests. Still not on insulin, last A1c 6.4%.

I'm doing my best to reduce the load on my pancreas by sticking to a low carb diet - but there seems to be conflicting opinions whether "resting" or "reducing the load on your pancreas" actually has a measurable effect. So maybe my disease is just progessing slowly no matter what I eat??? I don't know for sure, but the low carb thing is working for me at the moment

Great to have a sub-forum for us "half 'n half" types!!

Dave
