1.5 ????

In the mail today, I got papers from my insurance company outlining my treatment and diagnosis. It said I was type 1.5, based on medical test results and the fact that I cannot survive without insulin! I did not know that! I called my doctor right away, just to discuss this with him, but will not be able to talk to him until after noon tomorrow. I have never been able to pin him down to an official diagnosis. This report also listed my other medical tests, which they expressed surprise because, blood pressure, cholesterol, etc, was so good! They fussed about my weight, but not too much, they mentioned something about "adominal swelling, related to the disease". They also said they would send me a new meter, which I have been wanting, so I have one to carry with me and one to leave at home.

How the insurance company DXed your situation is not worth much outside of how it effects what they will pay for and what they won't. It almost sounds to me like their rules say you cann't be a type 2 on insulin, so ...
BTW, nice that the other stuff BP, etc. is good.

Your insurance company shouldn't be making that diagnosis. Your doctor should. I would be interested to hear what your doctor says.

And rzrbcks, technically, we are type 1

Anyways, I have found that sometimes insurance diagnosi are different from the actual diagnosis. In other words, doctors tell the insurance a partial truth to get the coverage they need for treatment.

I had this happen to me. I needed Singulair for asthma, but I didn't try enough other asthma meds to qualify for insurance to pay for Singulari. So doctor told insurance I had hay fever so they would pay.

It frosts me that the doctor has to lie to get coverage for his/her patient's need. I know that very few insurance companies have doctors processing claims. When records between the insurance company and dr.'s office is screwed up, it does not show the true picture. (Intelligent comment, huh?) Something needs to change here!! But how do we get it to change. I would like my Dr. to be in charge of what I need to improve my health. (After myself, that is.)

If Penny's insurance company is right about her because she needs insulin, then I must be type 1.5. Guess I'll just say, I'm one of those confused diabetcs that don't know what she is.
