| | | pregnancy and lantus I asked my endo about using lantus and he told me I should not be on that insulin because I want to get pregnant. So, I was wondering if there is any of you who are or were pregnant while being on lantus??? If so, did you have any complications?
Thanks a lot!

| | Here's an article about it: Insulin glargine safe for pregnant diabetics | Health | Reuters
If it were me, I'd tell them that trying to get good control on NPH was way more dangerous than using Lantus. But that's just my opinion.

| | | That doesn't make since...Type 1's take insulin of all types and have successful pregnancies. Not that things don't happen...but not due in insulin as far as I've heard. I would consult with an endo that specializes in pregnancies...or a high-risk obstretician who is knowledgeble about diabetes. The most important thing is controlling blood glucose during pregnancy.
Not only that, but many women develop gestational diabetes and take insulin as needed...so I don't see the logic of your doctor. Sorry. |

| | | I am pregnant and was given a choice of Levemir or Lantus. Not sure why I chose Levemir, I think the name may have just sounded nicer or something. Duh.
The bottom line was that it is better to have tight control in pregnancy than to worry about the effects of D on your pregnancy. Many woman use Lantus and have beautiful healthy babies.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.
Heather.

| | | I am a type 1 diabetic and I used lantus during my pregnancy. I had complications completely unrelated to my diabetes- my son's placenta started to detach so he was not fully growing inside of me- he came premature but completely healthy and now over two years later has continued to exhibit no signs at all of any complication. The doctors don't like to advise women to use lantus during pregnancy because the insulin has not been around long enough to show whether or not it has any long term effects on the baby - my pregnancy was not planned so I had no choice as to what insulin to use but everyone was fine and the lantus helped me maintain a perfect HBA1C throughout the pregnancy. I would definately advise you to use an insulin you are comfortable using because it is more important to maintain your blood sugar levels while you are pregnant than to worry about the potential effect the insulin type can have on the baby. |

| | | Thats really good to know! I have enver had such good control until i was put on Lantus so I plan to keep going with is. Althought in NZ they perfer to put expectant mothers on a pump through the duration of their pregnancy, I really think i may be able to go through the pg without it~! |

| | | I am now 13 weeks into my 4th pregnancy, I have 3 beautiful little girls. Have been type 1 diabetic for 10yrs now. After my last birth (Nov 2006) my endo switch me from Humalin N to Latus which was a wonderful thing. Lantus is awesome in keeping good control. I recently switched endos and my new dr just took me off Lantus and back onto Humalin N b/c there's not enough research with Lantus and it's effect on pregnancy. It's been a week since the change and my numbers are all over the board.....it's totally bummed me out not being on Lantus..... |

| | | I would have thought that it would have been better to have you keep good control? I mean, what huge affects is lantus likely to have? Is it really that different in make up than other insulins really?? Gee, Id hate to have them switch me from the best insulin that works with my body to something that make me out of control.. |

Or just ignore the doc and stick with your Lantus?

| | | Lantus is totally safe for pregnancy. If you check, you will see that almost every medication out there is category C for pregnancy. This is because no one is willing to do trials on pregnant mothers...lol
If you read Dr. Hale's book "Medications and Mother's Milk", you will find that he's done studies on Lantus passing though breast milk and it's such a minute amount, along with Lantus being a naturally secreted hormone (just long lasting, unlike "real" insulin)...it's perfectly fine.
Go back to Lantus. Better to have awesome control during pregnancy!!!

| | | I am TTC (well on a break after miscarriage (unrealated to diabetes) at the moment) and they have me on Humalog and Novolin. I was told that they want me on the meds that I would be taking during pregnancy, now. They asked if I would rather have a pump, but did not seem to prefer it. They want me in good control and my body used to what I'm going to be on.
Not sure specifically on the lantus though... I'm on NPH and in great control. They stress that HA1c of 6.2 or less is crucial to healthy pregnancy.

| | | Yea ive been on NPH too and it didnt work for me, hence the switch to lantus.. My doc here in Nz has brought up the lack of study into the effects of Lantus during pregnancy, but I would much rather have good control to be honest..
The do perfer that we are on a pump thru the pg but if I can get away with not being on one i will! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
