type 1 and miscarriage

I'm type 1 and recently had two miscarriages. has anyone else had problems keeping pregnancies. I am waiting to try again but would love advice on how to better manage my sugars. I have been good but not great. did you keep sugars perfect before conceiving? I am afraid that my occasional 200 sugar hurt pregnancy

Might I suggest speaking to a diabetic nurse and specialist or midwife who have experience of these things. Perhaps it is not diabetes realted

I lost a baby over 5 years ago, not from miscarriage but from pre ruptured membranes.

I am currently going through ivf but the diabetic team are putting me on a pump next week. Speak to your diabetes nurse about them, they are very good at getting blood sugar levels down apparantly.

My oldest daughter had 6 miscarriages. Number 7 was the charm. She is still pre-diabetic but she also has a tilted cervex.

I had miscarriage at 9 weeks, no telling if diabetic related or now. But I did go through years of infertility treatment and a couple of surgeries. Nothing worked. There are plenty of diabetic moms out there though! One doc said that it could have been auto-immune related. Agree with talking to diabetic docs/nurses. BUT an awful lot of first pregnancies go to miscarriage, sadly. Good luck - I'm thinking of you.

Hi LADiabetes, so sorry luv, you are probably still grieving for your loss - and that is perfectly normal. You would be surprised to hear that "actual" number of woman who suffer miscarriages - unfortunately a lot of women don't often talk about them. A large number of women also have miscarriages even after they have had a child - and yess every loss hurts.
As a T1 diabetic myself I can understand that you feel it's your fault - but it's not - it's mother natures.
I would definitely recommend tight control of your blood sugars before trying to conceive and right throughout your preganancy - for your own health and that of the baby - as everything in your body crosses the placenta and directly affects the baby. I have been given the same advice from my Endo if I want to have another baby.

I am so sorry, you have my condolences, losing a baby at any time hurts. I have been a diabetic since age 5 and I have 2 healthy children and I also miscarried for the first time in September. There is no way to tell why I miscarried, but the fact that my blood sugars were out of control may have not helped at all. I know that diabetics have a higher incidence of miscarriage when poorly controlled but not from an occasional 200. It's also very important to be in great control when conception occurs (this is something I learned the very hard way when both my girls were conceived) because this takes the risk of miscarriage way down. I hope you find the answers you're looking for.

I've had 7 miscarriages, in between all of the other kids I have. I had some testing done that shows I actually also have a blood clotting disorder, called Factor V Leiden. Those clots can cause late miscarriages, mine were all before 13 weeks though.

I'm currently taking heparin 2 times a day, in order to keep the current pregnancy sticky.

Definitely keep your A1c below 7%, and even better below 6%.

I'm sorry to hear about that.

I just had a miscarriage in January, that would have been my first baby. I was about 11 1/2 - 12 weeks along already to. I know its hard and it hurts, but you'll be ok and you'll go on to have a healthy baby in the future I'm sure.

I just recently had a miscariage this month. I was 10 weeks and did not know, but the baby stopped growing at 9 weeks. I have an insulin pump and my blood sugars were maintained fairly well. I did have some lows at night that scare me into thinking they could have caused me to lose my baby. It's very hard but I know that having your blood sugars in good control give you and your baby every benefit! I recommend a pump to anyone! It has been a huge life saver for me!

Aww I'm so sorry you're going through this right now. The same thing happened to me with my miscarriage. I was supposed to be almost 11 weeks along when I went for a regular OB check up and they couldn't find the heartbeat so they sent me back for an U/S and that's when I learned that my baby had stopped growing at 8 weeks and I didn't have a single sign that anything was wrong. I just wanted to tell you that your lows didn't cause you to miscarry. As far as I know, lows during pregnancy are scary because of what can possibly happen to the mom while she's that low. You know, passing out, or falling. Lows aren't harmful to the fetus. Please don't think you did this because you didn't, I promise

i am sorry 2 hear that. i had 3 miscariage. so i am going to do the insulin pump and thats reallly good for you so i think you should try it out

I have been Type 1 for 16 years, and got pregnant but unfortunately lost my baby at 33 weeks. We have been trying for 8 months, with no success. Can understand what you are going through

I am so sorry honey, I know what you are feeling I have been there, and I wish I could help you with a definitive answer, but as my previous Health care team did nothing to help me I can't offer a perspective on it, My only advice is don't panic, and investigate a pump, even if it's only for the duration of trying to conceive and the pregnancy. I have been pumping less than 1 mth and my Bgs are super compared to before.
I know good tight control reduces the risks for us and our babies but also there are a number of other factors which might be accountable.
Unfortunately even with the tightest control apparently we are just as likely to M/c as any other non-diabetic mother.

Please don't beat yourself up, or focus on the occasional high result you'll drive yourself nuts. I am sure you are still grieving, I did for each one but try to throw your self into something positive like pursuing a pump.
Sometimes there is no one to 'blame' (you included) it's just that mother nature throws you several curve balls for no good reason

I had a miscarriage at 11 weeks with my first pregnancy. I went on to have healthy pregnancies in the future with a diagnosis of GD. I do not think it was diabetically related. Unfortunately, 20% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. And it is a difficult thing to go through, but the good news is that it might not be diabetically related and one of those unfortunate situations that just happens. Talk to your doctor and see if they can shed any more light on how your sugars may have affected your pregnancy. Wishing you the best!
