      Question help

I am a juvenile diabetic patient for 25 years. Now i am expecting my 2nd baby-32 weeks . My doctor advised me to take steroid injection since there may be a cause for pre mature delivery. Is it appropriate to take steroid injection now? Will it not increase my sugar and my baby's sugar? Is it suitable to take insulatard injection now?

Why don't you provide us with a little more information? And have you talked to your diabetes educator, or endo, about how to anticipate counteracting the highs from the steroid injection? Usually, that's given to jump start development on lungs in the anticipation that you're likely to have a premature delivery, what makes the docs think that's likely? Do your weekly, or biweekly at this point, biophysical profiles indicate the potential for early delivery?

I've had the steroid shots and all I can say is that they are painful... and they work. If your doc is concerned then I would take them. Not sure if the risk from higher sugars is greater than lung development but (i've seen this first hand) for babies born without the steroid& born early, have a much harder time, are on ventilators longer and being on vents makes it harder for pre term babies to gain weight. I's ask your ob what the risks are and then make an informed decision. If it was me (and it was 13 yrs ago) I'd take the steroids... but that's just me... Hopefully you go full term.

Well, Ive had the steroid shot but that was because my waters had broken at 34 weeks and there was a definate chance I would go into labour and have the baby within 48 hours! - and I did. So, yes I took docs advice and had the steroid shot!! For sure I did it, but yes it is freakin painful for 2 seconds then gone, but definately matures babys lungs so must be done if you are definately having this baby prematurely. Yes, it does make sugars sky rocket but I was put on a drip, could have done a better job myself though. My baby's sugars were fine and baby was fine, except premature and monitored in the nICU FOR a month but fine now, (11 months now).

If your doc says you are definately having the baby before 37 weeks then yes, the steroid shot makes sense. But can you tell us why you are having the baby at 32 weeks?

If there is a just a possibility that baby might come early then why would you get the shot? Its just a possibility.... but if your doc says that the baby is definately coming early or you have been scheduled to have the baby early ie through c-section then having the steroid shot would be needed in order to develop babies lungs!!

Baby will be fine if delivered early at 32 weeks, so dont worry. The steroid shot would be wise. But no need for steroid shot unless baby is definately coming early!

      Good luck

Sorry, re read your post, I see that you are 32 weeks now and doc says you might deliver early. Well, I think unless you are definately having baby early then no need for the shot. Hope I am helpful.
