High Blood Sugar In Morning

I have had a problem with my morning blood sugars for quite some time now and nothing seems to work for that long!

It tends to range from 15 - 20 mmol in the morning as it takes a big dip at night to 0 and then rises.

At present I take my Shot of Lantus at approx 8.30pm as suggested by GP and at first this helped as blood sugars were 5.2-7.8mmol but now it has gone back to being 18mmol without me eating or doing anything different.

GP has suggested that I do another injection in the night, but frankly that's taking the piss!

Any suggestions from you guys would be greatly appreciated.

If you're dipping low in the night then you're probably suffering from the Somogyi Effect, which is where you have a hypo in your sleep and your liver pumps out glucose. If you can stabilise your nighttime BG, either with a snack, reducing your Lantus dose or splitting it, you should get better morning BGs.

Otherwise, you might be suffering from Dawn Phenomenon. If you're not doing so already, eating breakfast regularly should condition your body to not pump out sugar first thing.

Another slightly leftfield solution might be to have a glass of wine or similar before going to bed - the alcohol should keep your liver busy and make it 'forget' to pump out sugar in the morning, but only do this if you know you're definitely not having sleep hypos.

Exactly what Deus said. This is a very frustrating BSugar effect. I had it for a REAL long time, till I got a pump, where I could program different settings at those odd times of the morning 2-8 am where our liver starts talking.
