Talking Strange (but good) experience

Evening all,

I have had diabetes around 18 moths and have enjoyed a long honeymoon period. During this period my insulin requirements increased steadily, and up to last week I averaged around 36 units a day (Lantus/Novo) when keeping to a sensible diet.

However, I had quite a strange experience on the weekend just gone.

Last Thursday I had really low blood sugars all day long, and had to keep eating constantly to keep my blood sugar up. Given the lows I didn't even take any insulin with my evening meal and to my suprise my blood sugards stayed normal. I would be sky high if I did this on any other occasion. On Friday I significantly reduced my morning Lantus and Novorapid shots and again had a bad hypo not long after breakfast. I decided to take no insulin with my lunch and evening meal and I was shocked when my blood sugards remained perfect. I then managed to get through both Saturday and Sunday without taking any insuling at all, and my levels remained perfect. This was perfect timing given I was away for the weekend, and I even managed a restaurant meal with desert with no problems on Saturday night.

Through the honeymoon period I have expereinced phases where I my insulin requirements have got lesser and greater, but never so severe as a TDD of 36 units to 0 units!

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end and I am back on the insulin today, but not as much.

I certainly enjoyed my diabetes-free weekend, especially since it co-incided with a weekend away with my Mrs to celebrate our 1 year Anniversary!

MD

Same thing for me too for quite a while. There would be periods where I could go a few days without insulin. Even a basal of .1/hr in my pump would make me go low.

Give it time.

Isnt it nice.

I agree though my TDD has been going down by 1 unit every week and im 7 months past diagnosis. now im averaging 10 units per day for my TDD.

I also have those same exact days where i don't need insulin at all. BUT i have noticed a pattern. (for myself neways) When i stay around 85 for a couple of days my TDD goes down respectivly. I seem though to be the exact opposite though in regards to the lows. It's hard for me to go hypo. I need to have a 30 min run 8.5mph to make me go under 75.

After taking my non-diabetic sisters BS pre and post meal. I have concluded that running 70-80 isnt all that bad. My sister runs in that range almost constantly, and shes pretty **** healthy. It makes me very skeptic on "safe" ranges that doctors set for us.

If anyone has any solid info about complications of running slightly low I would love to hear.

Hey RufC

Did you drink alcohol the day before your zero dose day? That could do it too.

No alcohol at all, modbom, and I was able to go without insulin the whole weekend.

After having a fair few drinks my requirements for insulin can be less the next morning, but not my whole dosage less!

Unfortunately I am almost back to my normal requirements now, but it was enjoyable spending a weekend taking no insulin whatsoever!
