Can anyone point me to good research on the connection between diabetes and an increase risk of Alzheimers? My dad suffered from severe Alzheimers, and I believe I'm more likely to get it through genetics, but if there is an increased risk from having diabetes it appears I've got a double whammy coming my way. Anyone know of good reading somewhere?

I thought it was the other way around. Alzheimers increases your risk for diabetes, at least that's what new studies are discovering and creating a possible type 3. If you want info on that, just do some google searches for Type 3 diabetes. But I haven't heard diabetes increases one's chance for alzheimers.

So far the only things being said are from the news media - they are famous for getting it wrong. The link between diabetes and alzheimers has been around for a little while and is just not hitting the press. The link as I first heard it was not that type 1 or 2 would progress to alzheimers but that alzheimers is a different kind of diabetes. Just as type 1 and type 2 are different - one does not led to the other as part of the normal progression, if any.

You can only believe a very small part of the news media's reporting of health issues.

The way I read it, is that having diabetes increases the risk of contracting Alzheimers. But the many references to increased weight and obesity makes me question whether the link is for T1 of T2, or if type is unrelated.

"People with diabetes are at increased risk of Alzheimer's disease, says Bill Theis, PhD, vice president for medical and scientific affairs at the Chicago-based Alzheimer's Association. And at least in women, Theis says, being overweight or obese also raises a person's risk of Alzheimer's."
