High Blood Sugars

I have had diabetes for 17 years and have never been hospitalized... until about a week and a half ago that is! It was a Wednesday night and my blood sugar was from 300-over 600 from during the night until around 9 that night. I had changed my pump site, taken shots and did not eat anything besides a salad and a small muffin during the entire day. I had contacted my doctor and we got my blood sugar down to 171 when I went to bed that night. I awake at 5:30am not feeling well and my blood sugar was 439. Somehow I started to go up again and then within an hour I was 517 and throwing up and having a tougher time breathing from being so high. I am a college student and live on campus (my house luckily is only 15-20 min away) so my father came and brought me to the ER. It took them until around 2pm Friday to get me back into control, after tripling all my doses and highly raising my basals. I guess I am writing this in frustration that no one can explain what happened... I took shots, changed my pump site, different bottles of insulin, not sick, did not eat, had lots of tests ran on me while in the hospital and all came out normal.... you name it, it was fine and could not be a possible reason for this. Anyone else ever experience a similar problem?? Lately I have noticed that when I am over 300 I no longer can do my 3 unit correction; I need to take atleast 10 units upfront to bring it down... Seems I've built up an insulin resistance when I am high.

when you are in ketosis it takes a lot more insulin.
i had an episode like that once but it was not as bad as yours. mine was only hitting in the 200s. it would go up and then i would take some insulin in 2 hours it would be okay and then 2 hours later it would be back in the 200s. i changed sites but that didn't help then i changed insulin and that worked. i started a new vial. the other vial i had was new also but it must have been bad. when my sugar level is over 300 i start with a little more than usual and i checked every 2 hours until it gets in the normal range.
i am just getting to know how much insulin to take while i am working. if my sugar level is at 200 i would take about 2 units but when i am working i take a .2. just that little amount will get it back in normal range. i check it often when i am working to make sure it does not go too low.

same problem

hello...I have had diabetes for 8 years and been a pumper for 4..i was wondering which insulin you use..I was on Humalog but it stopped working for me for a couple monthes. I spent two monthes in the 300's solid with basal rates at 2.0 in the afternoon. I switched over to novolog and it worked to bring it down..i still don't have the best control but its a little better..have you tried switching insulins? write back soon
