Fast Acting Insulin

Is there anyone who is type 1 and only take lantus or any long acting insulin and not any fast acting because they really are on a good diet/food selection for meals? Cause iv been experimenting with only taking 40u lantus last couple days and eating not a whole lot.For example for dinner i was @ 76 and ate corn on the cob steak and scallops.2hr later i was 97.i dont take any insulin in the morning and walk for 30 min so i don't bottom out and lunch i eat a low carb bread sandwhich and a few triscuits or something close to it and i haven't used any of my novalog.Any comments on this would be great cause its been fun not to take a shot before i eat and stay healthy

Whatever works for you. I could never go with only basal, but if you can, then don't worry what the rest of us (or MOST of us) are doing. Results are all that matter.

This seems dangerous to me, but if you test and take the novalog if and when it's required - the best of luck to you. Do you drop real low if you miss a meal?

I was going to assume that if you're a type one and don't have to take fast acting with any meals that maybe you're taking to much Lantus. If I only had the option to take Lantus then basically I wouldn't be able to eat. Even a low carb meal for me requires insulin. I guess if you were a T2 on insulin then I guess it wouldn't be impossible.

I brought this up a few weeks ago myself and have yet to figure out a true answer. Your body needs insulin to push glucose into cells. The Lantus will cover the glucose your body produces. The question would be what harm do you do or not do without having insulin to push any glucose into the cells with meals?

As long as your glucose levels stay within an acceptable range then there is no need for additional insulin, your body is getting all the insulin it needs.

I only take lantus right now. I do have humalog for just in case. But right now with all the running I am doing, and I try to eat really healthy, I am getting by on lantus alone. But also I am probebly still honeymooning too. hope that helps.claire

That's kind of similar to me - when I work out +1hr after a meal I burn down about 80-90 points of BG right then, and it drops about another 15 points later during post-workout recovery. I adjust my mealtime insulin to get enough of a BG rise for the workout. If I am eating about 50g of carbs at the meal, my Humalog doses can get pretty small. I generally get a 3.2 point BG rise from each gram of carbs.

My wife who is a T1 pumper, informed me yesterday that she is taking almost no boluses because she's low carbing. She said her bg's are running constantly around 85-90. I'd love to have that kind of control, but I've got to have my carbs. <g>

I did this for many yrs when working 16 hrs a day on the farm no problems with blood sugars and eating aprox 250 carbs/day I was and am using bovine Isophane.
Obviously hasn't done me any harm as been diabetic for 41+ years with no complications.
