| | Found This To Be Pretty Cool A lot of the time, you will hear about actors and actresses who are diabetic. I know that some sports stars are too but I never paid much attention to that until now.
I play golf some and I really like watching the LPGA players (for those who don't know, that's the Ladies). I found out today that there is a female golfer who is a type 1 and wears an insulin pump (wish I knew which pump, lol).
Here's the link if anyone wants to read about her: http://www.lpga.com/content_1.aspx?pid=2779&mid=2
Some of you may not care but I thought it was cool.

| | | That's an Animas pump, either the IR 1200 or 1250. There's a few other golfers that are diabetic, I just can't think of who right now.

| | | One of the guys who plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers is Diabetic. It's cool to see that he doesn't let it slow him down. He was featured on dLife, along with a baseball player (think the baseball player was minor league, but can't remember at the moment).

| | Cool Mark. Thanks for finding that out. I think positive role models like this are good for the newly diagnosed, both young and older. It helps them to see that we can do just about anything we want to regardless of the fact that we have the big D.

| | I remember reading a magazine article featuring a diabetic triathalon competitor when I was diagnosed - they had a photo of him testing his blood sugar while riding his bicycle in competition - and that made me think hey, one really can do anything. lol.
Here's a cool article w/ a similar sort of thing (perhaps it was the same guy in '97? lol) http://www.diabeteshealth.com/read,1038,4152,1.html

| | I have never let it stop me. Of course, I have always been the type to do exactly what others tell me that I can't do just so I can prove them wrong.

| | No I agree. I just had the fear that it could when I was sitting in emergency as a near 11 year old, so reading the article was nice assurance that it still meant such things were possible.

| | | I've heard a lot of conflicting reports on Halle. I believe she's type 2, though as I seem to recall her saying she didn't take needles anymore at some point...

| | Ah here's why I'm not sure...(haha, trying to figure this out)
This site ( http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/...diabetes_x.htm) says ""Once you're a diabetic, you're pretty much a diabetic," says Berry. "I have adult onset diabetes. I was diagnosed when I passed out one day. I've gotten my diabetes to a really manageable place. So I don't have really any complications due to it, but I still have to deal with it and check my blood many times a day." '
Whereas this one ( http://www.health24.com/medical/Cond...1536,16928.asp) says "Halle Berry – Oscar winning actress and Type 1 diabetic" and "“Sometimes, in the middle of a work day, it can be a little inconvenient to say: I have to go shoot up (with insulin). Can you excuse me please? I used to think in the beginning :Oh, they’re going to think I’m a prima donna. But I got over that saying: This is life.”
Halle is also an active volunteer for the Juvenile Diabetes Association."
But the part that makes me think is TV guide's ( http://online.tvguide.com/newsearch/...bjectid=152937) quote: "Diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 22, she sought treatment from a holistic MD who helped her control the disease without insulin injections."

| | more than anyone's ever wanted to read about Halle Berry and diabetes but (good 'ol google), in THIS ( http://www.findarticles.com/p/articl..._18703559/pg_5) article it says "She has also had to struggle to restore her health. Seven years ago, when she was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, she was told she would have to take insulin injections three times a day. Determined not to be dependent on a needle for the rest of her life, Berry sought an alternative treatment. She went to a specialist who gave her a diet that basically eliminated sugar. Although it was difficult, she cut out sweets, and over the last four years she has completely weaned herself from insulin. She now controls her diabetes with her diet and herbs." Good 'ol herbs.
