gross belly button question

Last night my infusion set was itching. I changed it this morning, day 3, and it does usually itch a little the night before I'm due to change. This last one was near my belly button, but the cannula was inserted far enough away. So I'm scratching around the site and feel something wet - my belly button is sort of....goopy. I peer inside and it's all red. I squirted antibiotic ointment in it and it's not really itchy anymore but still very red. I do not make a habit of picking lint out of it or anything and I try not to insert too close to it. I'm not sure how it got infected or inflamed. Anyone ever have this happen? Maybe just the humidity/heat we had? I was taking two showers a day for the week+ that we had high temps.

Ewwwwww...Infected belly-button lint.

I'd bet it had nothing to do with the insertion set, but keep an eye on it and keep it cleaned and treated with Neosporin/something similar. Try and keep it dry, since so many nasty little things like damp/dark/warm conditions.

If it's an infection make sure it gets well taken care of.

My first question would be have you been using it as a container for dips for chips or vegatables? If so, have you been washing it with a good quality soap....Dawn, for instance.

Actually, my guess would be that the infection from the infusion set migrated when you were rubbing/scratching because the belly button is a Fine Place for raising bacteria

Liz, it could have just been a badly-placed heat rash. My kids tend to get those in their belly buttons and it gets really gross. Make sure after your shower that you dry out your belly button really well. If it is really gross smelling, then you probably do have an infection, but if it's not, then I like to treat the kids rashes by just making sure their skin stays clean and dry. Some sunlight can also help rashes disappear (but make sure you don't put sunblock there either).

I don't think it was from the set either. They often itch the night before they're due to be changed, no matter where I place them (Silhouettes). My belly button is an innie, so it's hard to let it air out! I'll just keep using the ointment and hope it doesn't get any worse. I really don't want to go to the doctor complaining of a navel infection.

Once upon a time I used to dry it out with a q-tip. {Probably should start doing that again. I think maybe it is heat related, since we've had a lot of really hot, humid days.

I can't believe I missed this thread. Ewwwwwwww! Stick your finger in it and then smell it! Does it smell? Just messing with you!

I would say it has nothing to do with the set and is just an infection. Neosporin will clear it up in a couple days if you use it faithfully.

The Neosporin did help. Belly button seems to be almost back to normal now! My finger (and nose) are very relieved.
