| | Hello people, been away for long time! hello everyone, for those that remember me I was the chap from Sout Africa with a lot of hypo problems and was still using Humulin, about a year back I was a regular here, and a lot of precious advice from fellow members here brought my life back on track. Thanks again to all of you and a quick update.
I was put on Lantus & Apidra about 6 months back (maybe a bit longer). Since then I started stabilizing, the first few weeks were a bit of trial and error up and down charade, after that I soon stabilized and learned how to adjust my dosage accordingly.
My life took a turn for the better, as I no longer had the spook of hypoglycemia haunting me. I became more independent, met a wonderful girl as a result and my life changed for the better. I have put on a lot of weight compared to the bag of skin & bones that I used to be, and a lot of my food allergies have disappeared once my blood sugar stabilized (funny one that!).
I have only developed a problem for quite a long time now, and perhaps one of you might have an explanation. Sometimes (not always, but more frequently when I eat it in the eveninngs) I have a problem eating beef. I end up urinating like 4 times a night more than usual. This doesnt happen with any other proteins (eg eggs, white meats, cheese etc) only beef. It's quite puzzling to me to be honest, mostly because it doesn't always happen, but mostly at nite or when I really eat a lot of meat. |

| | | Hi Pitzi and welcome back to the forums. I am happy to hear that your life has taken a turn for the better and you have things stabilized. It is amazing how blood sugar control can make many things improve in your life.
I do not have the problem you have with beef, but I have the same issue with milk. My suggestion???? Give up beef, it sounds like it may be hard on your kidneys. I gave up eating beef about a month ago and I feel much better for it. It can be a challenge at times, but well worth the effort.
Welcome back!!!
I love South Africa....took my second trip there this year when it SNOWED in Johannesburg. Lucky me!!! |

This whole thing is quite funny, because if it was indeed a kidney problem then why doesn't it happen all the time? but when it happens I run to the loo to the point that i have to go and drink extra water else I'll dehydrate.
I think I must cut back on the meat |

| | | Welcome back Pitzi. I'm glad that the Lantus/Apidra is working for you better and that your personal life is doing well too.
A large amount of protein will cause me a similar BG spike overnight and to the next morning. Protein is processed slower than carbs so it'll take longer to see a rise. The amount of protein and what else I've eaten makes a difference too. It doesn't seem to make much difference to me if it's beef, pork, cheese or whatever but I know if I eat more than 4 oz, I'll need to run a extended wave bolus for 6 hours on my pump to prevent that spike. Since you're not using a pump, my suggestion is to test every few hours and correct with Apidra if you see your level going up. Someone else may have a better way of dealing with your problem on Lantus/Apidra.
This tends to happen to me after my evening meals too, but I've always blamed that on eating larger protein meals in the evening than I do the rest of the day. Could be different for you though. What time of the day do you inject your Lantus?

David | Hi David, thanks for your input.
It's definetely not a BG issue. BG stays flat as can be. My Lantus is split in 2 x 12 hourly doses as 1 every 24 hours didn't cover me well enough. |

| | Protein definitely affects my bg. I almost always bolus for protein as equivalent carbs (75% of protein content). I do a 30/70 combo bolus over 3 hours for the protein boluses and I've had great results.
