Unhappy Newly diagnosed and confused

Ok so im not strictly the one who has been newly diagnosed and confused but my boyfriend has. We have just found out that he has type 1, which @ 21 has come as quite a shock. He is tired of me listing out facts and figures and i know that he will find all these out in due course. What really is bothering me is how he really feels,he was very much young and free before this. I guess that i feel confused and afraid of what is to come and need someone who has been through all this before to say that it will be ok.

Welcome.

Unless he's been sold into slavery, he's still young and free, no?

There are very very very very few restrictions on what he can do with his life. Seriously. Please stick around, and get him on here if you can. There is lots to learn.

Hi there. Everything will be ok, but your boyfriend has to really take control of this one - its no joke. There is lots to learn, but you know what? Of all the sicknesses and diseases out there that you could get, diabetes is definately not the worst! If he keeps tight control of his blood sugars, then he could certainly live a long and happy life (free of complications) just like anybody. He'll have lots of questions - this forum is super informative, with really great, experienced diabetics to talk to, so ......Welcome!

Hi And Welcome.

Thanks for looking out for your BF, that's Very Caring of you. Must
be Love. Anyways, you can help him but he will have to pull the
main stuff together himself. There is so much involved as you probably
noticed. I can't blame you's for being confused. Doctors still can't
seem to agree on it all. Researchers are....still searching...for the
finale.

He'll be okay as long as he is motivated enough to take control of his
Life and this disease. He must learn all he can but start him with the
basics so he won't be overwhelmed. I'm sure his Health Team have
given him some of the info he needs so he should learn all that first if
he hasn't already.

Other questions he may have, just ask or he can come here and ask
himself. He has support here and support from Folks who already have
it is Great.

Tell him not to fret. I've had Diabetes since I was aged 3 and I'm still
doing pretty Good. I've had a full life and he can to if he gets with the
program. He may be interested in getting a pump if he'd prefer less
needles. Oh and don't believe everything you read or hear from his Dr.
as gospel. Each Diabetic is individual in their metabolism rates, reactions
to stress, different foods, beverages, weather, illnesses. He has to test
often and figure those parts out for himself.

Best to you both. Hope to see you and him often.

Welcome aboard

You may find your boyfriend going through a bunch of emotions, including anger, self-pity, denial, etc. before finally accepting the diagnosis and embracing the disease to take control. Your support is golden...

im 22, diagnosed 6 months ago as a type 1. The key to getting this thing right is motivation to get control and testing as much as possible!!!

He can keep a log of his results and colour code them for below target, in target and over target... this way the goal is to make as many of the numbers on the sheet as possible green (in target) It's a way that I motivated myself and it worked really well.

Take one step at a time. Dont try to pressure him to do anything, and try not to make too much of a fuss, just accept it and let him help himself, but be there to learn with him as much as possible so he knows you know what he's going through.

Good luck!

Ok, well, let's put it like this.

I'm 22, I have T1.

Next week I'm off to Bangkok for 2 weeks because I'm just bored of where I am at the moment and fancy a change. Last September I went off to Ayia Napa cuz I suddenly thought a clubbing holiday might be a laugh.

I've got an all-you-can-eat buffet meal booked up for tomorrow. Right now I'm hocking back some absinthe I imported specially. I'm thinking about taking up scuba diving again because I haven't done it for a few years. Last week I was heckling this stand-up comedian. Meanwhile I'm checking up the gig listings to see what I might fancy. This Friday I'm going on the bender to end all benders because I'm having some issues with girls so the idea of getting wankered and then thrown out of a club seems a really funny idea.

Am I a role model? **** no. Am I young and free? You tell me.

Your boyfriend is going to be just fine - which means that so are you. So yeah, it will be ok.

you could also inject with him too... not into yourself, but maybe ask to do his injection for him, if he's like me, he'll let you... it'll help you guys to learn together.

I just let Laura inject my Lantus for me... IN MY BUM! hehe
