Im going to the Bahamas on senior trip in late June, and Im not sure if I should switch to the pump before or after....
Ill be drinking alot of beer, and Ill be outside alot in the sun. What do you think would be easier, Lantus/Humalog or the Pump?
If I switch in say, a month, will I have enough time to learn the ins and outs to be on my own for a week?

| | | I agree with Cyborg. Yoiu should wait until after your trip. (He knows a LOT about insulin pumps!) If he thinks you should wait, it is the best advise you can get. Assuming you are in good control, have fun, be safe and focus on the pump when you get home.

I mean, it's pretty easy to use and even if you just know the basics, that should be enough to get you by during your trip. But I think you should do what you are comfortable with. If you feel apprehensive about learning it now then wait.

| | eh....I would switch, but that is me. The pump is really pretty easy to use and if you plan on indulging, the pump could help. I would get a waterproof holder for your pump so WHEN you fall drunk into the pool or ocean, your pump is protected.  |

| | | hey. I am going to Puerto Vallarta here in 4 days and have decided to switch to shots for the trip. I am just doing this b/c i don't want to deals with taking the pump on and off and dealing with it the whole time etc... I will also most likely be drinking a good bit. The one thing about the pump that is great is how much it helps when drinking. If I drink I lower my basal to 25% for 2hrs/drink. with shots you cant do this. That is that only thing that is worrying me about switching back to shots. However, if I was you and were already on shots I would stay on them until you get back. Ill let you know how it goes for me when I am in Mexico.

I have thought about doing that for when I go to Puerto Vallarta. But I don't understand how splitting a dose makes it cover you differently. If it is a 24 hr insulin wouldn't you still have the morning shot in you even if you did reduce the night time shot?

At least most folks report not getting full coverage.
And yeah, it'll still be there at least initially depending on when you time your doses...mine are 9 and 9...but it wouldn't be the same amount as if you took the full dose. I can't really see any other way of cutting your basal back to allow for drinking yet not spending the entire day running a bit high. Unless you plan on rolling out of bed drinking... 
I'd play around with it a bit before you go so you can get it dialed in.
