honeymoon and basal insulin

I was just sitting here trying to figure out if my basal insulin is necessary or if it is just covering background insulin that I am still making. I am obviously still in the honeymoon since I use about 15 unts/day with about 5 of it going to basal. My waking numbers are usually at 100 or less. If I drink i set my basal to 0 for the whole night and will wake up with bs in the 80's. So I am wondering if my basal insulin right now is necessary or if it is just kinda helping my body out. I am not planning on stopping basal. I was just kinda wondering. Any thoughts?

If you're on a pump having at least minimal basal running will help rest your beta cells and prolong the honeymoon (according to some) and keep your site patent.

The only way to know for sure is to just stop your basal altogether and see what happens. I'm not sure I'd be curious enough to do that if things were going as well as they are for you, although I'd certainly wonder about it.

I was on Novolog for four months with no basal insulin. I didn't need it, either. I was only taking 4 units of Lantus (and actually needed less) when I started on the pump. I took that much Lantus anyway because I wanted to rest my beta cells.

I would have started the Lantus earlier (when I didn't need any), but it wasn't clear before that that I had LADA. So to answer your question, yes, it happens.

Yeah I am just hoping that even a little amount of basal will help me keep the honeymoon going. I have noticed that my body can't take care of sudden blood sugar spkes, like after a meal, since my ratios ar about 1:11-1:16. But once I get in target it will stay constant with a minimum amount of basal. It is really nice the times when I decide to drink a little more than usual that I use absolutely NO insulin for 12 hours and wake up with normal numbers.. like a mini vacation . I wonder how much longer I have until all by beta cells are gone.
