HBA1c increasing

Had an appointment at the YADS (young adults w/diabetes) clinic today.
It went alright - apart from nearly collapsing, went wondering off to a vending machine b/c I thought I was low ... dietician and DE caught me before I got to far... was actually 18.6mmol/l.

They're (DE & endo) are quite happy w/the way I manage my D still. Except for last, was on the phone to the DE's most of the day, forgot lantus woke up at 10.1mmol/l, ended up in the low 20 w/ 1.2 ketones on optium exceed meter.
Fasting numbers are going up slowly- increase lantus from 6-7 units, novorapid the same (doing 3.5u in the morning 2 w/lunch and 2 w/dinner).

Non - diabetes related... the endo and his registrar have agreed to admit me to hospital next week too. Been unwell since end of last yr-- w/intermittent fevers/bone pain w/it, weight loss, and very tired. GP didn't know what to do so sort of handed off the prob to the endo. Had a lot of tests done, some abnormalities, but they want to monitor me in hospital + run more tests, this time not looking for infections and autoimmune disorders as a cause.

Anyway question --> I was diagnosed with a normal HBA1c (5.5%) in September last yr, Dec it was 5.3%, Feb was 5.9%, now 6.6%. Can I expect it to increase and have a harder time keeping it down? Considering I was diagnosed rather early w/D...

No, the trend and levels depend on your management. We all go through slumps like this. Often it's like a kick in the teeth, but maybe that helps us get back on track.

Good luck with these tests.

it could also be a decline of your natural insulin like you were probably still honeymooning and now it is slowly going away.....so an a1c going up is just the indication of that....don't worry a 6.6 is not bad at all.....and you can get it back down, and also if your having other health issues this could affect blood sugar levels too....so hang in there and let us know how you are doing.....

Thanks.

I’m sure the tests will go fine, not overly concerned at the moment. Just not looking forward to staying in hospital. Good thing though, the doctor last night said it would only be a 2-3 day stay!

That thought crossed my mind too, honeymoon gradually fading. Only b/c of the increasing fasting bsl. As I’m still honeymooning will it be easy to get my HBA1C back down or not?

Sure it is possible you just figure what your new insulin requirements are and go from there....it is a work in progress but it is possible....
