Possibility

Hi,

What is the possibility to have a baby with or without diabetes? My wife is not a diabetic and I am T1 and its coming from my family side.

Thanks
Daryo

I believe if the father is diabetic you have a 7% chance of your child having diabetes, and a 93% chance of it not. That's off the top of my head, but I know I'm not far off.

Diabetics can usaually have Kids just like
non-diabetics. The mommy-to-be, if she
is the Diabetic, just has to be more careful
about what she eats, exercise, sugar levels,
etc. Some women with diabetes do get PCOS.
I'm not sure if that is just Type 2 though.

My Kids are 21 and 25. My youngest Brother's
Kids are 13, 22, 27.

Unfortunately, sometimes non-diabetics can't
conceive but that a small number.

Good Luck!

I have a book called "When You're a Parent with Diabetes", and there's a table in it that gives genetic risk factors for diabetes. I am not sure where this information is derived from, but they have many scenarios listed. Here are a few:

If father has type 1: child's risk = 1 in 17
If mother has diabetes and has child before age 25: child's risk = 1 in 25
If mother has diabetes and child is born after age 25: 1 in 100
Both parents type 1: 1 in 4 to 1 in 10
Parent diagnosed with type 2 before age 50: 1 in 7
Parent diagnosed with type 2 after age 50: 1 in 13
Both parents type 2: 1 in 2

I am type one, my husband does not have diabetes. We had five kids together (I did not get diabetes until after the fifth child).

My kids are all grown the oldest is 30 the youngest is 22. None have diabetes to date.

I know this isn't scientific, but there it is....

I am type 1 and my son was diagnosed with type 1 as well when he was 4, which was 2 years ago. If you have diabetes and have kids there's always a risk that they will be diagnosed but there are a lot whose parent have diabetes and the children don't. Just the luck of the straw I think...Good luck
