Lantus. Need a little help

New question. I just switched to exubera and lantus last night. The exubera works ok need to make some adjustments. But when i took the lantus about an hour before bedtime it took about 30 minutes and my BS dropped from 145 to 29. has anyone else had a reaction like this. Itook the lantus about 4 hours after the exubera. The only thing i could come up with is mabe i still had some novalin 70/30 still in my system.

Any Ideas?

You may need to cut back or split your dose (1/2 in morning, 1/2 at night).

I thought that too. Of course the doctor didn't agree since the amount of lantus i was taking was less than the amount of n i was getting out of the 70/30

I think Aventis recommends a Lantus dose of something like 20% less than the NPH dose. My doctor told me to take 20% less too, although the Lantus dose that works for me is exactly what my old NPH dose was. If you went that low only 30 minutes after taking your Lantus, then I doubt it was the Lantus. I've heard people noticing a peak around the 4 hour mark, though.

I was thinking also that maybe since it was the first time i used the exubera and that morning i took my last dose of novolin 70/30 that maybe the exubera peaked and maybe what was left of the 70/30 peaked out at the same time.

Hopefully it was just one of those freak things but i'll find out tonight when i take my second dose of lantus

I switched to Lantus from NPH just over a month ago and I had a lot of trouble with insulin reactions that first day. After that, my blood sugar ran high for about four days before I was able to get it adjusted. Now, I never can tell what's going to happen.

Lantus, or any other insulin for that matter, won't drop you that far that quickly. It must me something else.

I've experienced some huge drops from lantus before, but it happens over a 4-6 hour time frame after the injection is taken. I don't think lantus has the ability to drop you that much that quickly.

I've had that happen before. It's not your dosing of Lantus, that was far too quick, but it could be that you injected in a fast absorbing spot such as a busy muscle, or a blood vessel.

It seems like a likely explanation to me, since it was so fast and such a big drop. But it could also be the combination of the recently injected Lantus, the leftover mix, and the leftover exubera from earlier.

Are you keeping a log of every injection & meal so that you can see trends and see what's going on if it happens again?

It could very well be the novolin still in your system. give it a day or two and see if it happens again. I find sometimes even with the super quick acting Apidra I use it still sometimes hangs around alot longer than its supposed too.

hope this helps

I had a couple of similar experiences with Lantus, although not as severe. I always made the assumption that I managed to somehow get it into my bloodstream too fast. It only happened a couple of times over the 4ish years I was on Lantus.

I grew tired of the overnight lows over the year and half I did lantus at night.

I take lantus in the morning now, and that leaves my night time to peace and fine sleep without losing consciousness due to lantus overnight low. I can still wake up with bs of 55 or so - but for me, 55 still seems very sane - I mean, I can function quite well being that low. Of course, breakfast comes on, along with humalog, and the day rolls on.

If you are brave like the other experimenters here, you may want to do the morning shot of lantus. But, try the regiment the MD provided and see what happens - after this initial bad experience.

i have had this happen to me a few times, i have only been on lantus for 3 years, i take 21 unit in the morning, around 8am. the few times this happened, i took the lantus, ate breakfast and had my usual 3 or 4 unit of novalog, and my BS went from 120 or so, to 40 or once it was a 29, in less than 30 minutes.
one doctor told me that possibly "my panceras was playing tricks on me" but this was not my endo.
dunno
good luck.
it hasnt happened in a few months, maybe last time was january?
