| | | Birth control question So, I have been on "the pill" since I was 14. My endo at the time thought it would help control the BG's better through puberty. It worked, and I have been on it since. For more of a birth control issue than anything else P Anyhow, I went to pick up my last prescription yesterday and the new pharmacist there says "Did you know that as a diabetic birth control pills aren't a good idea?" I was totally confused. Anyway, wondering if anyone has heard anything. I do have a tough time controlling my BG's, maybe it's been the birth control all along???
Thoughts anyone??
Amy

| | | I would tell the pharmacist that as a diabetic, an unplanned pregnancy would be an even worse idea.
I have been using the contraceptive pill since I was 14 too, and have not noticed any problems, nor has anyone ever suggested I not use it.

| | | There have been several threads here on this topic, if you're looking for more info.
My endo was comfortable putting me on the pill and my GP didn't have an issue with it. Neither of them felt that I would be subject to greater risks than a non-diabetic. For me, the improved BG control since I've been back on the pill and the decreased risk of pregnancy is well worth it.

| | | I was told the same thing years ago. Apparently they assume people with diabetes have poor BG control and also high cholesterol so the pill could actually cause problems. A bit like if you're a heavy smoker and on the pill, they warm you it could be highly dangerous for your health. |

| | | I was also told that by a gynecologist and then I went to another one and the pill was no problem. I took it for approximately 15 years without a problem. If your doctor knows you have diabetes, then tell the pharmacist to fill your prescription. |

| | | I think it's probably due to increased risk for DVTs and such. |

But the hormonal "peace" that you get with the pill is a great advantage I think, and makes control much easier if your hormones are unruly and cause &$#! insulin resistance. | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
