thx. | Sometimes it's how fast you got to the low. Did it get that way slowly dropping over the course of a few hours? I feel them more when I plummet quickly. Also, when I'm really busy or involved in something I don't notice until I go to stand up or move on to something else.

| | | Also you're brain senses the blood sugar change more quickly than what is measured in the blood.

| | | WEIRD!! i actually had this happen to me today.
And it scares me. Some of the older people with Type 1 that I talk to tell me that as you get older - the more amout of lows you get the more your body will get use to them, and not be able to feel them comin. Normally from 71 to 81 I get shaky - I am in Canada so that is like 4.0 - 4.5 mmol.
Anyway today before lunch I tested and was reading 77 and didn't feel a thing. Kinda scared me.

| | | Thats called hypo unawareness i think. Basically if you get hypos very frequently, over time you will sort of lose the feelings you get when you blood sugars are low, meaning you stand an increased risk of having a serious hypo. However, this can be completely reversed by letting your blood glucose levels run a bit high to basically reduce the frequency of your hypos.
Can someone confirm that this is true, i remember hearing about it somewhere, but i cant remember the source |

| | | I've been there...had low 60's where I felt just fine and low 60's where I felt hypo...for me I really think it's more related to how quickly it's dropped (or still dropping) and how long I've been there. I had a 65 yesterday...I didn't feel hypo, but I didn't feel altogether normal, either (which was why I checked.) I didn't start having any hypo symptoms until AFTER I'd corrected and it was back up to around 77....which I thought was, you know, weird.

| | | It does over time make you unaware of low's I've been as low as 18 and still do not feel it. Then other times like this morning I was 35 and I fealt it. Weird but eventually over time, your body does become unaware of low's because you've had so many.
However, there will be times you'll feel it and times you won't.
I know its weird but ive had it for so long and it happens to me all the time.

I know its weird but ive had it for so long and it happens to me all the time. | I think there's at least two levels of unawareness. You lose it over time as your body ages. Those reactions you get when younger are largely due to adrenalin release. As we age are adrenal gland slows and we lose this sensation. Unfortunately I relied too much on this awareness and learned the hard way.
There is also a micro-level of sensation that seems to be affected by frequency, normal levels, and rate of decent. You can improve this awareness by keeping in better control.
It could be you didn't feel it on day 2 because you were low dy 1. This seems to happen to me too. |

| | | I agree that it depends how quickly you're dropping. I've had days when I thought I was dying and been like 68 and others when I've felt fine and been 43. |

thx. | You also need to remember that all readings from a meter are subject to a margin of uncertainity. |

I think the belly full comment might have cleared it up cuz I wasn't hungry when I didn't feel the 60, but I was hungry when I did feel the 65.. |

| | I was once 36 and didn't know it...
Although I think it was because I was nervous. But the other day I took my glucose before bed and I was in my 60's. I agree with the comment above that states your body get's use to lows.... or maybe your body doesn't want to believe your going through another low so your brain gives you other excuses to feel the way you're feeling?
...I dunno

| | | I took a nap yesterday. Woke up and didn't feel right but did not have enough sense to realize what was wrong until the cold wetness hit. I had eaten something but did not realize what it was. By the time I checked it was 30. Feel sure I had been out for a while. It has been a long time since I have been that bad. I was alone but would not have mattered if my husband had been here. He tells me to do something and if I don't you can forget it. I did get my mail after waking and found some of it in the trash today. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
