Lightbulb cgms advise.

hello people,

i've just been put on a cgms (continuous blood glucose monitoring system) by my diabetes nurse for 72 hours.

my bsls are shocking and have been for some time (my hba1c is like 8.6 - that's the first time i've told that on here), mostly due to the extreme lack of care i've been taking, but is also due to other (rather boring) social/emotional reasons.

i was just wanting some advise as to how to interperate, manage and cope with the results i'm about to find out. my nurse will go though the results with me and of course adjust my basal rates, carb ratios etc.

however, as i tend to trust people with lived experience over those in the medical profession can anyone give me advisce?

thanks heaps, lauren.

Hi Lauren:
I go through this every year. A CGMS is hooked up for 72 to 96 hours to record the ups and downs of BG for that duration. Basically it shows how you are doing overall, what type of food affects you, etc. Of course one has to record every bite of food and drink that is consumed to calculate the carbs intake. The purpose of the whole thing is to make suitable changes to bring the BG levels to acceptable numbers. For me it showed that my night time numbers, while sleeping, were rather low (mostly below 70). Certain restaurant food was not good for me. The sugar levels stayed up high for long time
I hope you will get a lot of god feedback from this test.

Yup, the first thing that it showed me was my nighttime numbers.

Secondly, it was able to explain my body's response to my morning sugers. I was having spikes about 15 mins after I got up. Was is Dawn? Was is eating issues? I was actualy a combination for me.

Lastly, I was able to see how my body reacted to not eating. Mainly because I kept forgetting, but non the less, it's good data.

All in all, you get out of it what you put into it and also it will help you get the awnsers that YOU are looking for to help manage your diabetes.
