Weight loss becuase of the pump?

I started the pump June 4th. I was on 8units of Levemir, but it translated to only 2.4units in the pump. In June I weighed a healthy 118lbs. Now, 3months later I am the smallest I have been since age 16!! I am down to 108lbs, and not feeling good about it. Alot of stress since pump start (my 6yr old started hers the same day) I haven't changed eating habits.

Would it make sense that I have had weight loss becuase I am on so much less insulin?

So you're still eating the same number of calories as before? Have your BGs been good since the pump start?

Weight loss isn't uncommon with pumps, but that's generally because you can stop "feeding the insulin", so to speak. But it sounds like that's not the case with you. The stress could definitely be the big factor here.

After 4 weeks of pumping, I had gained 7-lbs and figured I would continue to gain because that's what everyone told me. I went back to the endo 4 weeks later and had dropped 5-lbs. A month later, I had dropped some more and before I knew it, I was down to 113-lbs and feeling like ****. I added more carbs to my diet and have stayed steady at 119 for the last 18 months.

Hang in there...........things will eventually even out for you.

Much better numbers since pump start thanks to .2 and .3 corrections with an ISF of 250! Same eating habits. I thought I read somewhere that being insulin is a "growth hormone" that less insulin = less body weight, or was that for children with Diabetes?

If it is any help, I lost a total of 35 pounds since my pump date, around there, I was actually 137 pounds, when I started to pump, and now I swing around 105-108 pounds....Lost it really fast within in month I was 126 pounds, then I went down to around 115 for most of the summer, and then when I started working in late July and in August I was 110, now I am around 105-107....I dunno, I cut out one thing in my diet, and that one thing would of not of kept that much weight on me, cause I was always not on that one thing but I was always on two types of insulin, and always kept a good 20 extra pounds on me....to 30 extra pounds...so I dunno...

but I noticed weight loss too

I lost weight with my pump start because I was watching everything I put in my mouth closer so I could get my pump set right and no longer treating lows plus less insulin. I was 115ish lbs before and had been forever. I ended up at 105 and had to add back fat as healthy as I could so I could be what I am now which is about 107-109lbs and mantaining.

I noticed that I started losing weight the less insulin I was taking and I start gaining it when I use more (winter).

And this is with all medications, eating habits and exercise (or lack there of) staying the same.

while i agree that stress maybe a causing factor here, are you sure your eating enough calories/carbs to maintain a healthy weight to start with?

if you continue to lose weight perhaps some investigations to check nothing else is causing it?

I have a question for those of you who are "accidently" losing weight on the pump. What insulin are you using? This probably has nothing to do with it but I'm just curious. If switching from humalog to novalog would promote weight loss then I'm all over that idea lol. OK, so alot of wishful thinking on my part, but what are you pumping?

Hey Alisa..........I'm pumping Novolog. Personally, I really think it's more related to genetics than it is what type of insulin one is using. My younger brother pumps Humalog. He's 5'10" and thin. He eats like a horse and still can't gain weight.

I agree in Genetics too. My mom has never made it over 110 after having kids. Busy, always going, never giving to yourself. Chronic stress maybe

I have lost 22 lbs since I started pumping 6 months ago. Another 40 to go!

In my case, the reason is the lower glucose curbed my between meal hunger, and made eating fewer carbs doable.

I'm on MDI...and am just wondering if you're losing weight (on pump) because you are having fewer lows...treating lows adds calories you normally wouldn't be needing.

Personally, I don't find I have to chase MDI insulins (Lantus/Humalog) like the older insulins...but still, I catch lows all the time.
