I went to the eye doc today and he found a small dot of blood in one eye. He said it could be from bg spikes and that hopefully it goes away in 3 months when I get another pic taken. Anyone else had this? Is it common?

Sorry to hear that about your eye. My ophthalmologists tell me that the tiny vessels in diabetic eyes are fragile as a result of high BG and/or uncontrolled diabetes, which causes them to break and leak. 15 years ago I had extensive laser (2000 - 3000 each eye) as the docs said it was an opportune time to cauterize all the bleeders and "weed the garden," thereby preventing blindness somewhere in my future. Because of these treatments and the scarring they created, this option is no longer viable as new bleeding is now happening and obscuring sight in my left eye. The macular specialist said we could do a vitrectomy (eiiuu ). Keep those BG levels on a tight rein, do research and get all your options on proceeding with treating your leak. The good news here is that you actually had a thorough eye exam. Many diabetics find these breaks too late.

If caught early and blood glucose kept in a healthy range, the thought is that these breaks will be prevented or minimized. According to my doctor, he has seen them in diabetics with excellent control also. So, just do what you can and make sure you get regular eye check-ups (opthalmalogist)

what happens when you have good A1c's (5.8 recently) but at times... 2-3 times a week after a meal where you miscalculated carbs your BG is say 180-220 two hours after meal...then I correct it and back to 70-110 2 hours later... will instances like this cause all these optic pathologies?

Yes it's common and I would get a better description of that dot. It sounds like just a single 'dot' of retinopathy which in most cases is nothing to worry about but reminds us to take better care of ourselves.

If you had a bleeder your vision would have been effected.

Do you know what type of picture he took (ie Optos image map, dialated cam shot, etc)?

I'm one of those that has not had a check for some time. When one referes to a bleeder what do you mean? I have several black spots which I see when looking out, but I have to focus on them. When I move my line of vision they trail a black short line just like a meteor, also the movement across the ey is wavey and eratic but in the gneral direction of the eye ball movement. Is a Bleeder?

I think my doctor calls those "floaters" and I'm sure there is a better medical term for them. I think those are debris from a leak, I'm not sure. I think they can go away. But, if you are having a lot of them, I'd be sure and get it checked out.

I once had my doctor ask me if I'd noticed one (he had seen in exam) and I said no...but when I looked at this bright white walls...it was clear as day. They are very annoying!

I wear contacts and glasses, so I go to the Opthalmalogist at least once a year, often a couple of times to deal with contacts. I'm now wearing "progressive" lenses and am extremely near-sighted, so I'm not an easy person to put into contacts these days. I grew up with them and don't want to give them up! Thankfully, glasses are more fun these days.

floaters are totally normal... non-diabetics have them.... having a few floaters is totally normal... it's when NEW ones develop in a short period of time or you have a LOT of them is when you should seek help ASAP.

No its not a floater, i knkow what those are they are common. This was just a dot and the doc said it could be from bad control and he expects it to be gone by december

I've been told that if it moves around and has a tail that is blood in the eye from a bleeder.
