Question Lantus adjustment and travel

Hi All,

It's been a while since I have been here, busy with house remodeling.
We are going to take a vacation to Kauai,Hawaii , and I am not sure how to adjust my Lantus for the time differance. It's 3 hours behind California time (I think!!??) So should I just split the differance and Take it 1&1/2 hours early the first day? I split my dose 10 units at 9 a.m. &8 units at 9 p.m. We will be there for 5 nights.

I know, check with my Doctor, and I will, but I would feel better hearing from you all first. I hate to fly anyway, and this is really freaking me out! HELP!

One way to do it is to not change the dose and just change the times back 3 hours (or whatever the time difference is) So take at 12 and 12. (if you think you will be awake to do it. This is how I used to handle small time changes 1 or 2 hours. I suppose it would work for 3. Much more than that you might want to do some dosage adjustments.

Or if you think you won't be up at 12, you could do 11 and 11 or 10 and 10 the whole trip. There is no reason you have to take it at 9pm local time for a 5 day trip. And because you split your lantus between two shots a day, being a couple of hours late the first time won't be such a big deal.

Just be careful if the time change is the other way (taking it earlier than expected could have you with a double dose and you'd end up with a low or two... I'm not a doctor but in this situation I might knock a unit or two off that first dose in the new time zone).

When I travel I don't pay so much attention to the lantus timing. I only take one shot a day, and I cover for decreased lantus action with more novolog in the evenings anyway... so I just take the shot sometime round about the time I usually do. I find 2 hours in either direction doesn't make a whole lot of difference.
