Using the pump, I have hashed out a basal rate that seems to be about right, and which I have plotted on the graph below (the red line). Previously, I was on 12 units of Lantus split into morning and before-bed shots. Its action would have been about .5 units an hour (the red line). As you can see, there are some major differences. When on Lantus, I coped with the morning basal shortfall by injecting 8 units of Actrapid (Regular insulin) at 6:00am. It also covered a no-carb breakfast. I dealt with the afternoon excess in basal action by having fruit for lunch and covering it with a reduced amount of Novorapid.
It is all making a lot more sense now. I can now see why I used to have hypos if I skipped lunch, and how I managed to get away with having a beer after work without covering for it.
