Big concern about insulin resistance

I have been type 1 for almost 30 years. No major complications.

I take Lantus and Apidra. Both have worked great.

The last 3 days, I seem to be completely resistant to Apidra.

I normally take 2 units at breakfast, 2 at lunch, and 2 at dinner. Sometimes I take a little more.

Yesterday and this morning I have taken FIVE TIMES that - and my blood sugar simply will not drop.

So far:

- I have taken dose(s) out of my pen, and also tried a bottle in the fridge.

- changed injection sites.

- I do NOT feel sick (except feeling lousy from high blood sugar.)

Contributing Factors: (possibly)

- I have been on vacation this week (somewhat less activity but not THAT much.)

I don't get it, and it seriously has me worried.

My blood sugar when I woke up = 237.

That was at 6 am

Since then I have taken 7 units of Apidra.

It is now 9 am.

My blood sugar now = 217.

I still have a pen of Novolog in the fridge - I might try that later.

Also - my Endo is awesome. The local hospital however would not recognize diabetes if it hit them, let alone have any idea on this one.

Thanks for any input -

- Aftiel

Yeah the same thing happened to me, so I had to go back to Lantus and Humalog. Apidra was doing fine for a little while then all of a sudden it just seemed like it didn't work at all. I think that Apidra leaves the body much, much quicker than Humalog thus causing the higher blood sugars. If I were you go back to what you were on before and you'll see an immediate difference. Good Luck!!

Aftie- What you are saying sounds for me like a normal D cycle. At least for me my bs' will stay pretty good and all of a sudden they will go high and no matter how much insulin I take, I use Novolog and Lantus, it just does not lower my bs. This may last for a week or ten days. I will take my bs mid morning and afternoon and than take several more units of insulin if it is high and it is just like I am taking water. All of a sudden it will than go back to normal. I used to just worry myseklf sick and try to figure out what was doing it but now I roll a little more with it and of course, up my insulin but than all of a sudden my bs will get very low and I am back to my normal. One of the curses of D for me. I have been insulin dependent for 64 years.

It must be the Santa Anna Winds! It could be your Lantus too. Have you tried a good location for it? Is it old?
