Unhappy Is this Insulin Resistance??

Hey all, its been a while for me.. having some pretty scary and frystrating issues right now though.

Ive been Insulin dependant for about 18 yrs, on the pump and humalog about 8-10 yrs.

Ive always had good BGL's.. 6-7 A1c's

The last week or so my BGL's have been extreeemly hard to control.

I'll eat and bolus correctly and I'll be at 300+ !

Then I'll take the "right" correction and 2 hours later it will be 230-270 -ish. I'll rebolus with the "right amount" again and it will finally get down around 150-180's

It seems to take 3 times more insulin than usual to get highs down.

SOMETIMES a food bolus works great, others, it seems like I am hyper sensitive to carbs or somthing.

I'll go a day good and then sudenly a day that I cannot get below 200 to save my life.

Normal days were 40-50 units, now Im at 70+ on the exact same routine.

Ive changed my sites TONS and am in great health.

Ive started a lowER carb diet today and it seems to help (today). Im going to end up with 55 units unless I get a high.

Please help if you have any ideas!

~Dan

that randomly happens to me every couple of months and lasts a few days, It either wont go down no matter how much insulin I take or it won't go up and stays low no matter what I eat

I have read in this PDF file about dosing of Humalog and this relates to the amount of insulin that you should have.
Quote:
Humalog was absorbed at a consistently faster rate than Regular human insulin in healthy male volunteers given 0.2 U/kg Regular human insulin or Humalog at abdominal, deltoid, or femoral sites
So dosing relates to how much you weigh say 0.2 and I would weigh 100Kg then that would be 20U of insulin.
Look at page 10 of the .pdf under the heading DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION and that would give you an idea if you have such an issue.

Everytime that happens to me it seems to be a bad vial of insulin. Are you taking any lomg term like Lantus or NPH? You might have to consider that too.

Consult your doctor about a possible allergy to Humalog. I have heard of this happening, especially with Humalog. If it is an allergic reaction then you have the option of switching to Novolog or Apidra.

Thanks everyone

I dont think its the stress or being sick.. other than the stress of THIS itself. And we've just given up on the Dolphins all together.

The dosing info was intersting, but that doesnt sem to be the isue either.. its been great till this sudden change, no change in weight.

And Ive switched insulin vials 3 times in attempts to find the reason.... no change there either.

Its weird though, Ive been GREAT since yesterday. The highest Ive had was 180.

We'll see how today goes. I think I might just make an apointment with the Doc and try Novolog or Apidra and see what happens. (gotta read up on those, all Ive ever known is R and NPH when I was on shots, humalog on the pump)

Its weird if thats really an allergy, that it would be after SO long, and then start and stop on different days. That doesnt seem right, so Im guesing probably not an allergy either.. but Im hoping this is insulin/site/pump related, not ME.

Ahh you're pumping. It sounds like a bad set then. If I'm not responding, I don't hesitate to yank it and try a new spot. I do find Novorapid better than Humalog in this respect. It does seem to absorb better.
