I:C Ratio

hello people,

happy new year!!! its the beginning of a new year and the beginning of new things!

i have started trying out the I:C system and i just wanted to find out how people adjust their ratios i know that the starting point is 1:15 but can you increase or decrease the 15 and what would make you do that or how would i know when to do that?

Hiya, as you are in the uk, 1:10 carbs is used so mind you don't get confused.

I do detailed profiling. I test every hour or even half hour and graph the results. I'm a visual person. I repeat the test several days eating the exact same things and keeping the same activity. I slowly adjust the dosage and/or timings until I get the profile I want.

Once I get my I:C nailed, I cut my testing back to normal or even less than normal

i'm new to pumping (since oct '07) and had to make a couple of changes to my I:C ratio recently as i had some strange readings post breakfast and lunch.
i was using 1:10 and was having lows before lunch and also late-afternoon/early evening. i ended up reducing both my basal rates and my I:C ratio, so now i use 1:15 for breakfast and lunch and 1:10 for dinner, i use 1:10 for any snacks in the afternoon...seems to work anyways

the 500 rule was fairly acurate for me when i was MDI.

i think we all forgot to mention that the higher the number of your I:C ratio the less insulin you are taking

ie 1:12 is less than 1:5

right i have read the 500 rule and i am assuming by the way they have explained it my ratio would be 1:11 as i usually take about 30units of fast acting and 16 of long acting.

this is going to be very interesting because there was a time when i was getting low before lunch and high before diner so i'm hoping this will help out.......plus excersice as well. how would i factor that in because i usually excersice 3/4 times a week. would i increase my carb intake and keep the same ratio?

Either increase carbs or lower your insulin, If wanting to lose weight then lower your insulin.
Good luck with it all

hello,

just a quick note to say thanks i have now evened out my I:C ratio and it seems to be working well!!! YIPEEEEE

its now:

Morning 1:5
Lunch 1:11
Dinner 1:11

but i have also realised that if i excersice before diner my insulin at diner time gets arbsobed quickly and i get low within an hour and half to 2 hours of eating. so i'm guessing that still needs some work into it but i'm still working to see how i can twick it up
