You say you live out in the sticks but you really ought to be seeing a doctor that will put you on a basal-bolus regime - its SOP for all T1's.
If you want some information about how basal-bolus works, there are some really useful books that you can order from Amazon

| | | Without giving your exact city...would you like to mention what part of Illinois you live? I'm asking since I just moved from the Chicago suburbs...If you are anywhere close to Chicago...then there are more endo's there than you can hit with a stick...
I know a pretty good one near I-80 (south of Chicago) in Frankfurt.
If there are only internists in your area, you might consult a second one for another opinion. Being Type 1 and not on fast-acting is a big red flag for trouble. I'd act quickly. |

| | | Thank you for the info. I thought after being on DF that something was wrong talkong and reading on here. I am south of Springfield and that is the closest place prob for me to go to see anyone that would be worth it and knowledgable. I don't know if you know where that is but I am about 4 and half hours away from chicago.

| | | I just did a fast "google"...check out the Springfield Clinic. They seem to have a diabetes program. Yes, you're a bit far from Chicago...but I had to ask since some of the "suburbs" are 100 miles out, it seems. They keep building in the cornfields and people keep buying!
(I googled "Springfield, IL endocrinologists"...you can do the same and maybe find more...) |

| | You definately need to be put on a fast acting insulin if your are type 1. Lantus is not meant to compensate for meals.. I don't see how that would work. Once you start taking a fast acting insulin, you'll probably notice that you won't need nearly as much Lantus (since in the Lantus is currently being used to compensate for your carbohydrate intake). If you have to, go to Chicago to see a doctor. By the way, if you don't currently have a doctor, who is writing your Lantus prescriptions?

| | | I have a GP family Dr. and I am leary on his knowledge. I was sick with strep throat over the weekend and when I was getting meds at the hospital one of the nurses made a comment about me being ONLY on lantus and that is what made me question him.

| | | Your sig says type 1 but your A1C suggests otherwise. Do you have a definite diagnosis? It is most unusual to be taking only Lantus. |

| | | Troy, I'd let the clinic refer you to an endo...I have moved around the country and always have to trust "blind luck" when finding an endo. Then, what I do, is keep an ear out for the "top docs" in the medical community after I've gone to an office for a while. If I feel I need to change, I do...but often I'm happy with my first doc.
Unfortunately, I just saw in my google search that there was an excellent Diabetes Education program at Southern Illinois University back in November.
I attended one of those conferences years ago in Orange County, CA (sponsored by the local JDRF) and it was an eye-opening experience to sit in a hotel ballroom with 300 other diabetics and listen to a panel of "experts"...I learned more from that forum than all my endo appointments linked together.
So, keep an eye out for such opportunities. Ask to be put on their mailing list...also get on the JDRF list in your local area. |

| | | This made me think...how I found my "most excellent" endo in the Philadelphia area years ago.
I walked into my local non-chain pharmacy and asked who was the best endo who "returned phone calls"...The pharmacy told me about an endo who, in their words..."he sees all the problem diabetics"...that made me crack up...but I made an appt and found out why he had such a long waiting list...he took his time in each appointment and people didn't mind sitting in the waiting room...up to 1 1/2 hours! (We all got to know each other very well!)
So, you could go into Springfield and visit a friendly pharmacist...they normally don't recommend docs...but some will help you out. |

Thats what I was thinkin, his A1C's are better than mine LOL
Pretty cool though being able to get those numbers on only Lantus.. Only way I'd ever see that being on only Lantus would be to never eat... | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
