Okay, I am taking my insulin and everything right...well My blood sugar is staying high, and I keep having ketones. I don't feel good at all right now.

I have no idea what is going on. *Ughhh*

Nicole if you are having high blood sugars and ketones and feeling awful then you need to go to the ER or call your doctor.

If you don't go then you need to be taking as much insulin as you need to get your numbers down.

Nicole,

When you are fighting ketones, you probably need to take more insulin that just the correction amount. That direction is supposed to come from your "health care professional", who you need to call if you can't get rid of the ketones. I was given a 1,2,3 example: light ketones, take an extra unit (in addition to the correction amount); moderate ketones, take 2 extra units; high, take 3 extra units.

Other than feeling bad and hurting from the high bgs, are you ill (flu, etc.)? And what have your bgs been today? According to my protocol, you need to be drinking liquids, with no sugar of course, every 30 minutes.

My Blood sugars have been in the 400's today.
I think I am getting sick though, like I feel a cold coming on.
My head hurts, my stomach, my sides, I have a runny nose and all that.

Do you have any ketostix? I'm sorry you feel bad -- keep trying to get your bg numbers down, and you shouldn't feel quite so yucky.

Those high blood sugars are probably also making you feel terrible. At such high levels you become very insulin resistant. Small corrections and insulin dosage increases don't make any difference, especially since you are getting sick too. I would start with a really big correction, and I would increase basal and bolus dosages by 50+% until those blood sugars are below 200. When this happens I would start easing off. You need to test every hour while doing this. Good luck with it.

It wouldn't hurt to put in a call to your doctor. If you are indeed coming down with something, then your blood sugars will be out of whack.

Hope you get well soon, Nicole.

"What everyone else said."

I have no additional suggestions... wish I did... so I'll just throw in some "get well" wishes.

Hope you feel better soon.
