My friend Dave died three years ago at about age 45 from a heart attack. He was close to 40 years D. Another friend died under the age of 40 from it. He never controlled his D and was very obese. They were strugling to save his legs at the time.

I am your age. I'm either type 2 or 1.5, the jury is still out on that. No heart attack yet. I tend to think I'm pretty active.

I'll try and be the oppisite. I have had type 1 for 34 years now. My wife worked in a cardiologists office for a few years and the Dr. wanted to do a test on me. He gave me all the bad news about wha the was going to find and how bad it was going to be. He basically told me I was a problem waiting to happen. Well I proved him wrong big time. He said all the tests came back with nothing at all. He could not believe I had type 1 for 34 years. He wanted to use me as an example in the office to show what can be done. I am no saint and my first 15 years looking back were a disaster due to minimal testing supplies and just lack of knowledge. I have for the last 18 yeasr been pretty good about exercise and eating somewhat good and try to keep my sugars in good control. It can be done and good genes also help. No real heart problems in my family. I'm not saying I can't have a grabber at any time but so far I am in the clear and it is looking OK.

Just started my 49th year T1. I do have well-controlled high blood pressure 115/60 and slight neuropathy in outer toes. Kidneys doing well and cardiac stress test showed normal.

My retinopathy began acting up about 3 years ago but so far I can read with my left eye and glasses, right eye still has silicone oil in it from my retinal detachment so I see (corrected) people but can't read with it. BUT...I will post a photo of my latest painting in the photos section.

I'm creaky sometimes from arthritis, like both my mom and dad.

For those of you who have had meters all of your life, remember that I spent the first 20+ years without one. It was an enormous advantage when they were invented. I began low-carbing at about the same time.

It also helps to choose your parents carefully. And never give up!

Mich

Can't wait to see your last painting! Can you explain the choosing parents carefully?!?! Was that a joke? My dad died at age 24 of nephritis -- my mom has RA, but is otherwise healthy as a horse.

Oh yes Jan, I was joking. Of course we can't choose our genes! I did put the painting up though.

the truth is complications hang over all us. the morbidity of it all is to compare how one holds up to someone else who doesn't.

to be proud of 40+ years and no complications is to regret when retinopathy shows up in others after only 10 years.
to attach to how it plays out how is a fool's game.

but rather it is to live one day, one meal and one dose at a time and do the best as one can, and let the chips fall where they will.

of course this bother's the diabetes police terribly. better to worry about what could happen and use that as motivation.

Just my opinion.

Ok, I was just having a blonde moment . . . thinking I missed something important -- maybe I was hoping for a parental re-do! I was also blessed with arthritis Now I'm going to look at your painting.

Yeah. With a few years to go before hitting 35, I'm thinking I'll try to avoid topping others.
