| | | Endo Visit I finally had my endo visit (scheduled it in september when i started having symtoms, only endo in town). My A1c is 6.9 and I have been on 6-8 units since Christmas (had the flu). I was using the opticlick pen for my lantus. My endo put me on the same dose of lantus but using solastar, plus humalog with meals as need. I am type 1 (LADA really as I was diagnosed 9 months ago at age of 27). I want to put on some weight because i am 27yrs old 5'11 and weigh only 131lbs. Can anyone give me any tips with the new meds and how to store them. Thanks.

When you achieve a positive calorie balance (calories in > calories out), you will start putting on weight. If you want to build muscle, you need to combine with this suitable resistance exercise (especially weights). Having a protein shake after workouts also helps.
Having said all that, it probably makes more sense at this stage of the game to focus your energies on improving your control and mastering MDI. When the honeymoon is over and things settle down, putting on weight will get easier. .

| | | Here's the other post of yours I was thinking about . . . I think you will start putting on weight when you get more insulin and quit running high bgs. Many of us type 1s were pretty skinny when diagnosed, then put on weight as we got the insulin to working in our bodies. Sorry, my info is awfully basic . . . maybe someone else can chime in to give you better ideas about gaining weight. OR, just wait, get adjusted and see if the weight comes on! Running too high all the time can keep you thin.

I am the opposite, in that I don't really want to gain weight back. |

| | I think I was suggesting is that when insulin delivery more closely matches insulin requirements, weight stabilises. But I guess calorie intake needs to come in line too .

I dropped 80 pounds before we got my system stabilized. Previously mentioned was the honeymoon period - during that period my weight went back up 15 pounds as I enjoyed the benefits of having a partially working endocrine system. You can read into that I was eating the border foods you mentioned.
However, as you progress with diabetes the honeymoon period ends, bg's start to creep up, and then you begin to have issues with cholesterol, triglicerides, and other fun side effects. Its better to stay away from unhealthy fats - especially sugary ones like ice cream and fries. A better choice would be to eat extra protein type fats such as red meat and cheese, but only as a short term weight gain solution since the heavy protein can be hard on the kidneys.
