| | | TDD Less Than 16? I was just reading a book (Using Insulin), in the chart at the back it doesn’t talk about a TDD less than 16, and I don’t believe that I am the only one. I have a TDD of 12.5 (Average, 0.5-2.5-2.5). I was just wondering if I am the only person who has a TDD less than 16 and I was wondering what your I:C ratios are?
I:C
1:46 Breakfast (this doesn’t make sense to me)
1:29 Lunch
1:25 Dinner (this makes sense to me)

| | | It's possible you are the only one on the forum . . . we'll see!
My TDD is between 16 and 18 . . . usually right in the middle. By eating low-carb, I've cut that back from a TDD of 20-24. And on days where my activity level is higher than normal, 14-15 is closer to my TDD.
I keep a 1:16 ratio all the time, but adjust the basals to take care of DP.
Are you very light (weigh less than 120)? And you are very active, right? You are insulin sensitive one could say . . . and too special to fit in the charts!

| | Doing the maths, you're eating 23g + 72g + 62g = 157g of carbs per day with only and you're putting in 7u of basal and 5.5u bolus. That's pretty tiny amounts
Mine seem to be changing all the time, but at the moment my average TDD is around 39u, 14u of which is basal. Ratios at the moment are 1:10 at breakfast and lunch, 1:11 with evening meal but ask my body next week and it will deny any of the above Around 220-250g per day of carbs. Low for my body weight of 89Kg but I feel I'm quite some way from running on ketones
With your 1:46 at breakfast, have you tried a fasting test at that time of day to see what your BG does without food or bolus interaction? Is it possible that part of your breakfast is being helped out by excess basal? Even if it is, I wouldn't worry about any of it if you're keeping well and are happy with your numbers.

| | I am 175cm and about 64kg (10stone/141pounds), yes i am active. Work out 3 times a week for a 1 to 1 and a half hours, play badminton for 2 hours a week and biking for 1-2hours a week. I think I should eat more in the evenings, so I might change things. My breakfast fasting BG is fine and my breakfast I:C appears to be fine as well such as 8:33am 4.7mmol/l (0.5units) and 11:17am 5.1mmol/l. I changed my lunch I:C to 1:33, things appear to work ok (had rice instead of bread). I guess I should stop worrying about being "weird" and just get on with it; maybe I still have my honeymoon period although things are very unforgiving when I get them wrong.

I was dx at age six and honeymooned until about age 11 or 12. Are your bg's almost ALWAYS in range? That's how my honeymoon was. But hey, be happy with low insulin levels...its cheaper that way.
I usually run aroud the 28-30 mark, but I eat 350-450 carbs/day. |

I usually run aroud the 28-30 mark, but I eat 350-450 carbs/day. | Actually I think your right, it explains everything really, I was bumming along at a nice predictable 18TDD and then suddenly my requirement dropped, couldn’t believe it. Now things are so unpredictable, I have had practically a straight line on my weekly average glucose trend for about 8 weeks, maybe its improved control, maybe its honeymoon. It reminds me very much of when I started, I have no idea how I got here. Only that I hope it lasts a few months (past my exams). Just got to keep doing what I am doing, not sure what it is but some things working right . I am currently visiting my parents and my weekly average has shot up from 6.0 to 6.8 over 2 weeks, maybe this is the end or it could just be adjustment . This disease just keeps me guessing.

| | | The honeymoon idea fits with everything . . . according to what I read and many others understand. I have absolutely no recall of anything like that myself, but it sure must happen to a lot of new diabetics.
Once again, it brings up for me how hard to understand this disease can be, and how we should have patience with all those who don't have to live with it, but who hear little bits and pieces.

| | | I can remember a lot of the unpredictability of my early days being put down to the honeymoon by the hospital. In fact I remember cursing my pancreas and wishing that it would just pack in so that I would get regular results.
A lot of the variability was, of course, down to me not having a clue about carbs or setting my levels in general. And I was on the cloudy stuff for basals. So how much of the weirdness was honeymoon and how much was lack of education / older insulins I really couldn't say. Come what may, I'm 13 years in now so those days are long gone... |

Don't think mine is the honeymoon period either, but my doses have got lower since I started suffering hypo unawareness 2 yrs ago.

Julie | What are your insulin to carb ratio(s)?
I am currently doing (trying to sort out breakfast ):
I:C
1:23 for breakfast (testing)
1:33 for lunch
1:30 for dinner

| | My TDD usually ranges from 12-18, depending on the carb loading of lunch and dinner. That said, at the moment the TDD is about 10, because my pancreas seems to be having a fit of insulin production ( |

| | I have a basal rate of 2.40 to 3.60 depending on the time of the month......my ratio is a standard 1:13 all day. I was dx'd type 1 at age 28 two years ago. Carb load usually equals around 8-15 more units a day, making me an average of about TDD 14 on average for better eating days

| | | I frequently go below 16 TDD, depending on what I eat and how much I'm moving about.

| | | hi, my son is still honeymooning, but unless he is sick i rarely have to give over 5 units of novolog, and 2 lantus so 7 per day, when sick he needs more, but if he is outside or exercises, he can go without any and still be low. insulin needs vary, and we probably would not whine about it so much on these boards if it was not TRULY such a pain in the bum to deal with...... best of luck | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
