Experimented

Decided to take the pump off for the day because I needed to fast anyway for bloodtest. So last night around 10:00pm I tested my blood and was 97 mg/dl and the last time I ate and bolused was around 6:30pm. Woke up in the morning around 6:00pm and immediately knew I was high.Tested and was an astounding 578mg/dl . Immediately corrected and kept testing for the next four hours until I was good again. Got home about 6:30pm, tested again and was 105mg/dl . So apparently at night I got allot more going on than in the day.

Completely took off the pump? No basal insulin to replace your pump's basal deliver?

Yeah, I know stupid. Was just curious how much it would fluctuate without food.

I know I go up an average of 50 points per hour without any basal insulin. Don't ever do that again you nut!! (Just messin' with you, but really don't experiment like that!) Ask questions on DF instead!

Derek,

Is that the highest you've ever been? I feel horrible that high, but I'd never thought about not waking up. When I first used the pump about 4 years ago, the cannula wasn't in when I went to bed, and I woke up in the 500s and madder than _____! It all turned out to be user error. Were you just trying to make sure you were diabetic?! I think you learned well the principle of basal insulin! Once when I was about 19 or 20, I quit eating for several days and quit taking insulin. So I can't call you crazy!! I was hoping beyond hope that I could starve and not need insulin.

I'm glad you are ok.

I'm curious what your basal rates are for those 12 hours.

Let's see (578 - 97) / 12 hours equals about 40pts an hour, the equivalant of about 8 grams of carbs. Interesting

I am glad it was twistedtexan who did the experiment - thanks for the lab report.

While I am MDI and not pump, plus I do lantus at breakfast, I still have some basal in the system when I go to bed. I cannot imagine I have enuf in the system to overcome a reading of 578. I can go to bed at 150 and wake up at 90. I presume that I am without basal for 4 hours from 3AM to 7AM, as most report lantus is 20 hours long. By your experiment, I could really rise in that amount of time, but I don't think I do... am I talking myself into an experiment? - No thanks!

Ok, no offense, but is your basic diabetes knowledge really this lacking?

You're lucky you didn't end up in DKA.

I wasn't calling you stupid, just was making sure I understood your post. I can imagine how crappy you felt at 578, and what you had for ketones...

Uhhhh....

Uhhhh....

Uhhhh....

Curiosity kills more than just cats.

Next time, consider decreasing your basal dose by a small amount. You wouldn't have doubled it just to see what happens, would you?

Be careful, please.

I'm curious what an unbolused 2L of Mountain Dew would do to me. (I used to do that all the time pre-DX!) However, I'm not curious enough to find out... knowing what a bolused 12oz can did to me[1], I don't do the Dew, even when correcting hypos.

[1] Fasting BG was 113. Injected 4U Humalog, walked around 30 minutes, drank 3U Mountain Dew. Twenty minutes later (nearing Humalog peak), I was up to 180. I'm scared to think what was happening pre-DX.

I know what I did was stupid but I was curious to see what would happen, did not expect it to rise that quickly. It's just very strange to me that my night time insulin needs are so high compared to my daytime. I thought it may just be something I was eating or eating to late at night but even with fasting I see I still require alot of insulin at night. My nighttime basal is triple what it is during the day.

Derek,
Have you gotten use of a cgms? My endo set me up with minimed's 3 day unit a couple of times. The overnight activity is very interesting. Safer to do it that way than what you did too!

Glad you could report at least as a warning to others!

BTW, when you are looking at endos in your area (from other post) ask about staff: pump specialists & nps. Sorry I don't live close enough ('bout an hour north) to have a recommendation.
