| | | SoloStar Pens users i'm going to be starting the SoloStar soon and i have a ? about them.....i asked my endo to write an Rx for syringes too since the end of the OptiClik pens leave insulin in the cartridge...he said i wouldn't need to extract any insulin since there isn't any left in the cartridge-i use the Novolog pens too and the same thing....insulin left in the cartridge after all insulin can be dialed in
any help would be great!

| | | I use these Solostar pens...really just started about a month ago...
Why would you need to extract the extra insulin? I'm not sure I understand.
I think you can just divide up the number of units you are injecting between two pens if you are at the end of a pen.
But I may have misunderstood.

| | | Is your Novolog mix? I know when I had a mix (no longer do) the little ball that mixes it then would mean that some got left in each syringe.
I throw my SoloStars out before they are empty so I don't know but will try and remember to check next time I have one with a partial dose. Since I have "plenty" of pens, when I get to a partial dose at the end, rather than two shots, I start a new pen (I know that is probably too wasteful). |

| | I do the same, yes its wasteful but when you look at the sharp boxes I fill up regularly, making my life easier by removing the need to do two injections is more important . It would make little difference to the waste I already produce. Waste production is just what we diabetics do . I dont think there is much left after you have given your last unit, could be wrong I have never tried to extract it. They should try to make diabetes more environmentally friendly, but to be honest I would rather they spent that money on a cure, solving the waste problem and all. |

| | | You can dial the Solostar until it stops turning. When you inject the plunger stops pretty much at the bottom, so there can't be much insulin left in the pen (a couple of Units maybe). If you are keen not to waste, you can then top up the rest of your dose from a new pen.
If there isn't enough left for the shot, I tend to dispose of the pen and start a new one. However, I always split any dose more than about 8U (e.g. for 12 U I will do 2 x 6) so there is very little wasteage.

| | | thanks -that's the answer i was looking for.....
like i said with my OptiClik-there's usually about 30U left over after i dial up the last that the pen will allow
BTW-i have the info on my CP (Lantus and NovoLog MDI's) nobody mixes these!

| | | I use the OptiClik Lantus pen. There isn't much left when it "locks" up at the end of it's lifespan. I wouldn't bother extracting those few units out. I'd rather start with a fresh cartridge. |

| | | There are a few units left- not really enough to get worked up about. This is true of all pens, and the manufacturers put more than 300 units in a pen because of this, so you're not getting cheated. BTW, your Opticlick should not have stopped with 30 units left. It should have gone down to just a few.

| | | Just gone on to the Solostar after using the Autopen for years.
Loving it so much, couldn't go wrong! A huge improvement for Sanofi i must say.
However, i get my pump in one week today, so no more injections! :p
