First A1C

Hi All, I am new here. Just diagnosed Type 1 about 3 weeks ago. Went to the DR because I just wasn't feeling right, very thirsty, losing weight (all the normal symptoms). They did a fingerstick and it was 274 (fasting). They diagnosed me right there, sent me for some blood tests and to the Endo in the office next door.

So I got the results and my A1C was 13.5%. I know that it is ridiculusly high but I dont know if it's higher or lower that other people who are newly diagnosed. How high does it go? I guess it doesnt really matter, just me being curious.

Anyway, I've been reading all the threads on here for about a week or so and I just wanted to say HI!

I have no idea what my A1c was when I was first diagnosed, however I do know I was 25.66mmol/l (407.88 md/dl).

You can put you’re A1c into real money if you wish :

Hi Jules and
WELCOME!

I have no idea what my A1c was at diagnosis, but I heard my bg was in the 800 - 900 range. It sure would be fun to find those ancient medical records!! My parents retell the story w/me being comatose (I was 18 and living on my own) but I never lost consciousness. I could have killed myself driving to my parents' house for help though.

Glad you joined us.

Hi Jules,

When my son was diagnosed 3 years ago, his initial A1C was
11. At his first endo visit he had dropped down to 6.5. Hopefully you will see a much lower A1C at your next endo appointment. Good luck to you and welcome to DF !

Valerie

I got you beat.. my first was 14.2 and it blew my mind. I had a reading on the finger stick that just read HIGH.. no number.. it was higher then the monitor could calculate.
However.. I am down to 6.1 now thanks in no part to the ADA diet.. ( which I think is insane) and all thanks to reducing carbs and figuring it out on my own.

Hey, I'm sure if they squeezed your blood out of that course of leeches they put on you they could have mixed it with eye of newt and seen what colour it was. As it was, I take it they just tasted your urine

mine was 14.9 and my BG was about 25 (450). i know that is pretty high on the A1C but my doctor thought swimming prevented earlier diagnosis i think (it went some way to controlling it). it all depends when it gets picked up. most people still have some islet cell function at diagnosis, the later it gets left the higher the readings!

A1C was not even heard of at my diagnosis. I do know my BS was around 500 though. I would not worry what it is then just what you can get it down to in the next 3 months.

HI Jules & Welcome to the forum. Nice people and tons of valuable information to be found here.

I was dx'd with a fasting blood sugar of 397 and an A1c of 10.9. My advice to you is to test often, limit your carbohydrate intake, and get in some form of exercise if you're not doing so already.

Karen

My 13.5% was one of the highest I'd seen, but I guess some of you do have me beat. And by comparison, I guess my BG wasn't too high.

I tried to convince the doctor that day that the high BG reading was due to the girl scout cookie delivery I got the day before... Needless to say, it didn't work.
At least I didn't have to go the the hospital. I think many who are diagnosed with Type 1 are shipped off to the hospotal immediately.

And chained to a bed by a tube plugged into a machine, pumping "things" into you and every once in a while the "stuff" runs out and your blood begins to slowly move up the tube. That freaked me out at first , its all fun and games.
