| | Going to Concerts? I haven't gone to a concert (big one) since I've gotten diagnosed. I've been to all sorts of shows with my wife because she is so affiliated with the theater world, but not too a concert lately. Usually at the other shows I can sneak out at intermission or something to just shoot my lantus at 10 like I usually do. I just wonder about other things at an intense concert though.. like lows where you can't take in any foods (glucose tabs) and you have to stand in line for ever to get a soda. Do any of you have any suggestions...?
I used to be a huge concert goer and now I kinda stray away, but since my wife has never been to a concert (go figure), For our 11 year anniversary (yeah I know I'm only 26) we're going to a Billy Joel concert. While I know its not going to be the same as being on the floor at a Nine Inch Nails or Green day concert, these things still worry me. I'll put off the lantus till after but what if.. you know. I can keep myself high, but I hate trying to get it back to normal. Of course as luck would have it, its on a Sunday which means with a hour drive home sleep will be at a minimum. I live in Dayton which is about 1 hr away from the said concert.
Just wondering what others do.. I miss the music world.. |

| | | You should be able to take in glucose tabs since they are considered medication not food. as far as injecting goes. I'd probably either wait until after the concert if its not too much past my usual time for an injection of lantus or find a restroom and take it there if you cant see well enough in your seat. |

| | | I always carry my glucose tabs with me, and a juice box and granola bars if I'm planning to be in a setting such as you described. Haven't had any trouble bringing food like this inside anywhere, including theme parks (Canada's Wonderland, for example). Once I mention that I am diabetic, I usually don't have to explain any further. It's not like I'm carrying a full lunch, just enough carbs to get myself through any kind of lineup. I've also had my meter, insulin pens, and medic alert id on hand, but really, it never gets that far. Security is usually afraid of getting picked by a needle, so they do not really open anything, but be prepared to open your cases for them, in the event that you meet up with an inquisitive security guard. |

| | | You are allowed to take in food if you are diabetic. When you are checked at the entrance, let them know you need candy or soda for treatment of lows and you won't have a problem.
Don't worry and just go have fun!!!

| | | As others have said, you can, and should, bring glucose tabs or other low food with you. You should have no problem with security if you tell them you have d. Also have your wife stash a few packs at the bottom of her handbag. Even if they give you a hard time, chances are they'll only glance in her purse.
But, you'll probably not be given a hard time. The only "hard" time I was given in all my years of concert going was at a rave. Security seemed to think glucose tabs would be an ingenious way to sneak drugs into the party. I was allowed to bring only SEALED packs in with me. Thank goodness the glucose tabs were an afterthought and most of them had been purchased en route to the party. somehow I dont' think they'll be that worried at a Billy Joel concert
Once when going to Yankee Stadium I was carying my "night out bag" which is tiny, and as such has meter, syringes, pens, pen tips, insulin, credit card, cash, and ID all stuffed inside willy nilly. I opened the bag, the security guard took one look at all of the sharps inside, made a "I don't make enough money for this" look, and waved me inside with nary a question.
All that is to say, bring what you need and act like it's obvious that it should be allowed in. You should have no problems.
If you want to take your lantus as usual go ahead! I used to take it when I got home from parties, but then again I was younger and stupider than I am now. Now I bring it with and take it if it gets really late. I don't stress about getting it precisly at 11pm which is normal for me, but if it gets to be later than say midnight I slip off to the bathroom and take it.

Why not just take your Lantus pen with you and give yourself a shot at your usual time. I do this all the time.
You can probably hike up your T-shirt a bit and do it without anyone seeing. They'll probably all be too stoned to either notice or care (well maybe not at a Billy Joel concert). |

| | | Lst concert i went to was the Red hot chilli peppers (woohoo!!! GO RHCP!) what i did was I test every half hour for two hours before hand to see what my sugars had been doing that day. I found i was lower than normal, so I had dinner as normal and then half an hour (7pm) before i was due to go in, i tested at 4.5 so I drank a red bull and ate a hamburger.
For four hours I danced i screamed and I jumped like mad!!! And when i came out of the concert at 11:30 i tested and I was sitting at 6.5 |

| | | whenever i get searched at concerts they come across my betes stuff and they always know whatsup and dont ask questions. same goes with glucose tabs.
in terms of lantus. do it an hour earlier each day until the concert so you can do it before hand - or do the same but an hour later. works for me.. have a good time man | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
