everyone is different

But I use an extended bolus for pizza

I use a 3- 3.5 hour extended bolus and deliver about 60% of the bolus now and the rest over the 3 hours ... Works pretty good for me - BUT i dont do pizza very often because of the issues

Are you honey mooning? Depending on how you have your basals set is the answer to that question, I would always correct a 9mmol/L high, unless you have your basal dose set really high. Would you normally experience a 4mmol/L drop over night? On MDI if I had pizza I would dose for the entire thing, then test 2 and half hours later, correcting if necessary. I haven't done this since i started carb counting mind. This wouldn’t work for some people they would choose to dose half before the pizza and then the rest two hours later. It really depends on you, I would try the first method I suggested if it works then you know. Make sure you test before, 2 hours later and 4 hours later, you can then see how pizza affects you.

Hi there, I am new to the forum. I must quote my new friends and say "basal testing" is the way to figure out what happens to bg's at night and to get them to be stable.

I have decided that pizza is evil. I agree with Doug that extended bolus is worth looking at. Thank goodness that I am not that fond of pizza. Muffins...different story.

Pizza behaves very well for me, but I make it myself.

Page two of this document shows the different overnight patterns. I drop very low. Everyone is different.

ok as xMenace says eveyone is different and has a different regimen as a result but most people i know have around 3u fast acting for every 10g carbs, i myself have 4u to every 10g. At night your liver may decide to dump glucose into your body for some reason known only to itself which is why most t1's use a slow acting insulin before bed to counteract this and also a fast acting for any carbs we have before bed, if your regimen is due for a change or you are ill this is where you have to be carefull and go to your Dr who will advise you more thoroughly.
hope this helps
Azz

Dude. Those are actually on the high side. My morning 2.5u for 10g is high. 1u per 10g I think is supposed to be the standard for the average sized rabbit. Or something like that. Definition of 1 unit of Rapid Insulin

best way for me also is to split the bolus. 60% now, 40% an hour and a half later.

if you want to eat foods like pasta and pizza and stuff. It's a good idea to experiment splitting your boluses... when you know how to handle it you can eat as much of it as you like!

You have made a good choice going the thin crust route. I can eat thin crust pizza with just a regular bolus. The pan or thicker crust pizza are the hard ones to get right.

For commercial white-flour pizza: I bolus using rapid about fifteen minutes after I begin eating. It works for me.

Re insulin ratios: 3U or 4U for 10g? Dude. I'd be dead with quickness. Each unit covers 15g for me!

yup, i saw that that and thought if i took 3 units i would have to eat a LOT of carbs, like a bowl of pasta....3 units to 10g, IMHO is not within normal range for type 1 (type 2 probably is i dont know???)
