Coeliac's :(

Ok, so i got my blood test results back from my Endo on Friday.

HBA1c is 6.8, and everything else is running well.

However, my glyadins pretty much diagnosed myself with Coeliac's. My first Glyadin returned a 60 (normal range 0-20) and my second was 202 (normal range 0-20). So, Coeliac's it looks like I've been pretty upset this weekend, and it isn't something that usually would. I've had a bad run of luck lately, and i guess this is why it's really got me down.

What is funny though is that back when i was much younger, i was thought to have Coeliacs. My first glyadin would always return a positive, and my second would always be negative. I still have absolutely no symptoms of Coeliac's whatsoever.

I have been referred to a Gastroenterologist to have the biopsy (via upper endoscope) done. I'm VERY hesitant to have this done, and would much prefer to move onto gluten-free immediately and accept the blood test results.

Does anyone have any advice or tips?

My work neighbor has it and resigned herself to the gluten-free thing a few years ago. As with any new challenge it was tough for her at first but she found the gluten-free products, learned the recipes, got comfortable asking in restaurants - all the things diabetics are learning too to stay in control. For her, the intestinal discomfort was a reminder that she slipped just like a high on the bg meter. Seems unfair to have 2 such maladies, but not insurmountable.

Do you need that test to confirm a diagnosis or is the doc covering his butt?

Good luck with the new aggravation!

the biopsy is the absolute diagnosis for celiac disease.. I have had this done, after being pretty convinced I was celiac—I wasn't.. it is bad IBS with nuts seeds grains being a big trigger...
My advice would be to have it done as either way it is a definitive answer and having the restrictions of Celiac as well as diabetes is not going to make your life any easier.. so no point in having them if it is unnecessary. my GI said the blood tests alone are not enough to make the diagnosis, just an indicator.
I believe though that Celiac and T1 are related conditions and often occur together. Sorry you are having to go through this, the endoscope biopsy is not too bad and at least you will never have to doubt the diagnosis. You might not realize you have any symptoms, but could be in 6 months without the gluten you will feel fabulous!
Good luck
