Wounds take ages to heal

I have noticed I still have a few cuts on my knees from falling off my bike months ago and I was wondering if there was anything that could be done to speed up the healing process.

I've noticed the same since my Dx and other than taking a vitamin C supplement I'm not sure what else can help... maybe perfect BS control?

Obesity and Type 2 are strongly associated. Most people assume that Obesity is the cause and Diabetes the effect. It is equally valid to suggest that the underlying metabolic disorder which leads to the Type 2 causes the Obesity.

Not all that long ago, I had some trouble with cuts or sores that developed taking forever to heal. 3 big things have changed for me since that time -- I am lot more active, I eat a lot better with a good amount of protein and quality carbs, and my blood sugar control is pretty good at this time.

I suppose it just goes toward what does the body need to heal itself -- it needs protein to rebuild the damaged tissue and it needs supplies to be brought in. Eating a good diet will help with bringing in the supplies, then you need circulation to get to the wounded area. Tight blood sugar control will help the capillaries, the smallest blood vessels do their job of giving the blood a pathway to the area and activity is probably helpful because I believe it helps increase overall bloodflow along with ramping up the body's systems towards its ability to regenerate.

when i get a cut that is 'contaminated' such as falling on the ground off of your bike, i get the Dr to order Bactroban antibiotic ointment for me

works better than Polysporin too

AND that way my insurance covers it

good luck!

I carry Neosporin and Bandaids all of the time. Past history as a mom, teacher, and diabetic I guess.

It takes longer if your sugar is higher.

Research shows it heals faster if you keep a "wet dressing" on it. Neo and a Bandaid works for me. Particularly if it was a deep scratch.

Really important to clean it up immediately and keep your sugars in check.
My Dr. suggested Vitamin E ointment.
I got a nasty scrape above my ankle a couple of years ago that got really infected spreading up my leg that took 2 weeks of serious antibiotics to clear up so now I'm really nervous about cuts.

Hi,
I have found medicated honey is the best thing to help with healing. Last year I had a mole taken off my leg and nothing would heal it until I used the honey. It kills the nasty bacteria as well as promotes healing.

Yup, it's a fact, it takes a long time for wounds to heal now. Just hope they don't get infected and you should still be fine.

Your A1Cs are good so I don't necessarily think its BG related. Don't take this the wrong way, but it might just be you're getting older

I am still young in my early 20s But I guess all things catch up with you in the end. tbh i was after some magic healing lotion but doesn't appear to exist. I will try to improve my bg and diet as I always strive to do but I doubt it will make a difference. I should just resign myself to a long healing process; I just hope I don't get any infections. Things do heal eventually I just hoped for a better way, might start wearing body armour for mountain biking to ensure I don't get any cuts.

Bactroban Bactroban Ointment (Mupirocin) drug description - FDA approved labeling for prescription drugs and medications at RxList and neosprin have been recommended for you

they really DO help heal cuts/abrasions where dirt has entered the broken skin

a good soak in a warm/hot tub doesn't hurt either

good luck

I have a black fly bite on my calf from over 2 months ago. I get skin infections all the time in very uncomfortable places. The funny thing is, depending on where the infection is I have to use totally different drugs to fix it.

I had good control too, my 2 week average was 104 and my last A1c was 6.3. It just goes to show that we are all screwed now

When I was first diagnosed I didn't listen to everyone about no bare feet, I have been rethinking that quite a bit lately. I even have been thinking about packing extra socks to work so that I can change halfway through the day on damp days to keep my feet dry.

I haven't found anything yet to help repair cuts, scrapes and dings yet, but I will share if I find something.

Savlon or Germoline will probably work well too, they do a great job for me.
