Muscle Mass

I have read that Hyperglycemia causes loss of muscle mass....can anyone tell me if I work out then make the mistake of judging my post work out meal resulting in a high reading the next morning. Was the workout (Weight training) worth anything or has the muscle mass that would have been attained lost?

Actually the normal people want their BG high after the workout, because then the body produses more insulin.

So I would assume that if you get high BG you'll get better gains. To some degree.

Tryin,

Welcome to the forums. Prolonged hyperglycemia can be catabolic, causing loss of muscle mass. An undiagnosed type 1 can be in this state, but you as a well controlled diabetic don't have this worry. After a workout, it actually is helpful to have a modest hyperglycemic state. After workout, insulin as an anabolic hormone enables the uptake of glucose into your muscles refilling your glycogen stores. This enhances recovery. Remember. You don't get big a strong from lifting weights. You get big and strong recovering from lifting weights.

Hyperglycemia will only cause muscle loss if it is accompanied by inadequate insulin. This is what happens to a T1 before insulin treatment is started. In spite of high blood glucose levels, the glucose is not used because of the lack of insulin. So the body starts breaking protein down to increase the supply of glucose. And muscles waste away.

As long as there is adequate insulin for cells to be able to access the glucose they need, high blood glucose will not cause muscle loss. If you are a T1, ensure that you don't run out of insulin. Especially during and after workouts.
