Now I'm LADA not T2.

Hello.. Are there any LADAs out there. My GAD titer came back over 13 so Endo says I have LADA. I've been treated for 7 years and a T2 with marginal bg control no matter what I did to improve the numbers. Is this a good site to stick with or is there a LADA which might be better. Thanks.

Larry

Hi Larry,
I believe I'm a LADA also and am going to insist on the GAD test when I go back in September. I've started insulin and it is helping, but I'd like to know definitively what I have.
This is a good forum. I'm a little unsure sometimes about checking the Type 1 forum, Type 1.5 forum or Type 2 forum (since I was incorrectly diagnosed a type 2 about three years ago). My feeling is there might not be as many Type 1.5s around. If you find a site that deals more with LADA I'd appreciate it if you would let me know. I have lots of questions about using insulin but I'm not sure where to post them. I'm on a 75/25 Humalog mix once a day. It is improving my numbers but it is somewhat restricting how I eat. If I don't want to eat much for dinner, I either get a really low blood sugar if I take my endo's recommended dose, or I get high morning numbers if I reduce it. Sorry to ramble.
Best wishes for your good health.
Jazzbo

Please don't ever be afraid to ask questions if you're not sure where they "belong"... there is a great team of moderators on DF who will move the thread for you if it is really in the wrong place and even more folks here willing to help with our opinions ( ) and hopefully answers

Obesity and Type 2 are strongly associated. Most people assume that Obesity is the cause and Diabetes the effect. It is equally valid to suggest that the underlying metabolic disorder which leads to the Type 2 causes the Obesity.

In lots of ways, LADA is just a later developing and slower onset form of type 1 diabetes, so you'll likely find that many of the issues type 1s face will be like many you will have.

Because LADA is slower to develop, it is possible for person to have some years of limited success at using type 2 treatment methods, only as you have likely observed, for control to further and further deteriorate because the type 2 treatments have failed to address the primary deficiency that has been troubling you -- a lack of insulin production that continues to grow more lacking as beta cell numbers dwindle.

Getting on insulin will be your best treatment option then. Welcome to the world of type 1s.

When I say getting on insulin, I mean getting on a basal/bolus treatment plan, either MDI or an insulin pump. If you're going to be on insulin, you might as well be able to eat and live as close to normal as possible. Basal/bolus is the best treatment option towards that presently.

I just hit the "New posts" link when I come here, when I need to ask a question I try to find an appropriate forum to place the topic in. I also do not hesitate to post in a T2 thread.

My GAD came back over 8. So that is interesting to read what you posted. My doc left me diagnosed at Type 2.

Welcome to our world!
LADA is the same thing as type 1, it simply comes on in adulthood instead of childhood. The treatment is exactly the same. Your in a good place here. And there are quite a lot of us around.

Welcome from one L.A.D.A. to another. I was diagnosed as T1.5 in May of '07 and have had good success from reading here and sharing/asking any questions I have. Don't be afraid to ask a question. If its put in the wrong place, one of the friendly moderators should be able to move it for you.

The worst questions are the ones that are never asked.

Welcome - there are quite a few of us T1.5/LADAs around here. The T2 misdiagnosis is quite common - many general practitioners seem to automatically make a T2 diagnosis when an adult patient presents with diabetes symptoms. It takes an alert GP or specialist to delve a little deeper to arrive at the LADA/T1.5 diagnosis.

But basically, you're T1, and the treatment/methods used to control are for the most part identical to T1 regimens. It seems most of us T1.5s tend to post on the T1 sub-forum here, I guess because most of what we have to deal with is the same as for "traditional" T1s, although there is a T1.5 sub-forum.

I too have LADA, I went straight onto insulin on diagnosis, but probably only because I'd not gone to the doctor with my original symtoms and left it for 3 years( long story).
I've found this site very useful in teaching me how to use basal bolus insulin so that I could lead a normal lifestyle. I have recently gone onto a pump to help avoid hypos during exercise and once again the forum has been extremely helpful

Hello HellenM: As I understand it... GAD equal to 13 is 13 dilutions on the titer and dilutions ie 1:2, 1:4, 1:8, 1:16, 1:32... the latter is "4". Am I correct that 13 reported is 13 titer dilutions or much more than 1:32 in dilutions ie. equal to at least 13 u/Ml

This LADA thing bothers me a whole big bunch. Can a Type 2 get re-diagnosed as LADA? I'm a Vietnam Vet currently diagnosed as DMII which provides me with a couple of benefits. But if the VA reclassifies me as some other kind of diabetic, I might be screwed. Right about now, I'm maxed out on pills, A1c rising about a half percent per 3 months (6.9%), got CAD, PAD and keeping good control would be a good thing. But, if I go onto insulin, might the VA nix the Agent Orange condition and kick me out?
