Hi Singh,
The argument goes that fibre is not digested so "yes" you can subtract the fibre from the "total carbs" to get the "net carbs". But you will most likely get differences in opinion as you read around here on DF: some will do as you suggest and treat it as 22g net carbs, other will include the fibre and say it is 28g carbs, yet others will only count half of the fibre making it 25g carbs, and others use a "threshold" approach where they discount the fibre only above a certain amount (or maybe that should be
below a certain amount?). For myself I think the trick is to just be consistent... always choose the same method so that when you test you BS 2 hours after the meal you will have one less variable to deal with
Oh... one more thing to watch for... here in North America the food labels show "Total Carbohydrates" and as a sub-heading "Fibre" so it is OK to subtract the fibre from the total BUT in parts of Europe they do NOT include the fibre in the total.
For example:
USA... Total Carbs 30g, Fibre 8g = 22 net carbs
UK... Total Carbs 22g, Fibre 8g = 22 net carbs
