Really Scary Low on Saturday

Hi all,

Just wanted to get some feedback. It was 10:40 on Saturday night, and I was watching TV at home. I started to feel light headed and figured I was low, so i tested.

I almost had a heart attack when i saw 27 on the meter! I tested 3 times, on two meters and they all said 26 or 27. I took insulin at 6:30 for dinner. 2 units (2u = 40 carbs) of Novolog to cover my dinner of roasted chicken, peppers and potatoes. Tested at 9:00 at 71, took a little juice to bring it up a bit and then went back to watching tv.

I always thought I would be unconscious if i was that low. I also wonder why i didn't feel any real symptoms until after i tested. After, i immediately began to sweat and shake.

I have only been t1 for 6 months (yesterday was my anniversary), and i haven't had any problems with unawareness yet. So i dont know why i didnt feel anything? Especially in the 40's? in the 6 months, the lowest i've gone is 49 and i felt that one.

The only thing i can think of to explain this is that my pancreas kicked out its own insulin and pushed me low?

Does anyone else have any ideas?!

It was very scary. Of course, i freaked out over corrected and went to bed over 200. But thats another story...

You story sounds ohh so familiar.

You are currently taking the same I:C ratio as I am. I have been DX'd a little over a year now and had a night just as yours a few months back.
I think you hit the nail on the head with your comment on "pancreas kicked out its own insulin"
Your A1Cs at DX were extremly high like my case.
I think that at DX when we started to take 3rd party insulin our Pancreases got to finally start to rest as we took the stress of them. This is my personal opnion.

The best thing you can do is watch the signs and test often.
When it happened to me it was extremly scary as I had a higher carb meal thus took much more insulin and it took me a while to get back up BG wise. I think it was 3 little juice boxes and 4 cookies before I could stay in the normal range and stop shaking.

You story sound very familiar. I might suggest next time you start eating before your test three times on two different meters. I have had a few lows in the 20 range without knowing it till I was there. The better control you get of Diabetes the more you body gets adjusted to those low numbers. It tends to lead to hypo unawareness.

If it continues, you can run your numbers up just a little. Your body will adjust to the slightly higher numbers and give you a bit more warning.

I have found that even when I go through bouts of hypo unawarness, I eventually start feeling lows again pretty quickly. Sometimes nothing more than an isolated incendent.

Had you any hypos in the previous day or two? That can affect your short term sensitivity.

My Boyfriend was in the kitchen getting me some juice as i was testing on all my meters. Poor Guy, i think i scared him silly.

I haven't really had any low's in the past few days. I think the lowest i read was 58. No highs either.

Whats most frustrating, is that I did exactly what I've done a dozen times before (with dinner, 2 u, testing, etc...) and this has never happened before.

Maybe my honeymoon is ending? My endo seems to think it has already ended, but i'm not sure about it. Does this type of thing happen when it ends?

I had to dig up my post when this happened to me jsut to review. At the time I thought it was a so called super bolus - but at the time I really didn't understand what that was.

Super Bolus By Mistake - Scarry Stuff!

This was back in April of this year. It did not happen to me since - as I believe I mentioned when I did take my insulin - I did notice a different feel, as if maybe I injected into a muscle or something. That is the only thing different that I noticed about that scary low.

Scary Low

I don't think that "not feeling lows" on occasion is abnormal. I have had Type 1 diabetes for 36 years (I am now 48) - and sometimes I can feel the low at 70, other times I feel completely normal even at 18 or 19 (my lowest reading ever).

The only advice I can offer is to check if in doubt - since I believe that it better to be safe than sorry. Lots of thing can effect blood sugar level, including where you gave yourself the shot, and what your blood sugar level was before dinner, or even where you took the long term insulin shot earlier in the day.

I find that if I inject Humalog in my arm, it works very fast - within 20 minutes. Injections in the stomach are supposed to work the fastest, but with my short needle it does not seem to be the case for me. Injecting in the thigh takes a long time for reaction - at least for me.

Also, if you feel low, go right for the glucose tablets or juice, as sometimes a few seconds can make the difference between correcting yourself or ending up in an ambulance (unfortunately, I know that from personal experience).

Good luck.
