| | | kidney function not 100%,help me! are there any diabetics here that have been told their kidney function is not 100%? My last blood test results showed a high creatinine level,it has been the same for 2 years. Does anyone know about this and what have you done about it? Are you seeing a kidney specialist? or your regular doc? what can you do about your kidneys to help them to function better? any tips? I'm getting freaked out about it and I need some help here. It would be deeply appreciated. thanks in advance.

| | | Hi Andy,
I don't have first-hand knowledge, but have talked to my endo about when/if I show these symptoms.
He said he would refer me to a kidney specialist he knows who is especially adept at managing diabetic problems. He also mentioned the possibility of restricting proteins, which he realizes might be tough for me--a low carber. He gave me the impression that it can be managed pretty well, so get the facts from a specialist before panicking.
Yeah, easy for me to say, right?
Here's a hug. Go find out. I'll be thinking of you,

| | | When I went to see my endo, he said I need to get my kidneys checked and sent me in for a BMP. I'm calling the hospital at the beginning of this upcoming week, and I'll let everyone know what the results are.

| | | Three years ago, I had a kidney function test done. I had high levels of creatinine and protein. The second test showed these levels to be higher. I was also freaked out.
I cut down on my protein intake and started drinking Ocean Spray cranberry juice light (made with Splenda). My next test (three months later) showed NO protein in my urine and my kidney function was perfect. It has been perfect since. I have to say, I didn't start drinking cranberry juice for my kidneys, I just liked it. I read later how it can have a significant impact on your cholesterol and your kidneys. I drink about 1/2 gallon of the stuff every week. I found it cheapest at Winco if you have one in your neighborhood.
Give it a try and let me know how it goes for you. It was pretty much a miracle for me.

| | Oh my god... I LOVE that light cranberry juice.
When I found out about my kidneys, I started taking 1 super-concentrated cranberry pill every morning and 16 oz (at least) of that juice every day. Super duper good for you.

Thanks for the tip. I'll get some cranberry juice right now! I'll let you know in a couple of months how it goes. Quote:

| | | I too had the protein in the urine and it is VERY scarry! I was very lucky to be seeing Dr Bruce Bodi in Atlanta and he put me on a combination of Diovan and Altace. He stated that the meds would reverse my kidney problems.
I remember breaking in to tears when he told me that! The first check was that it had not worked. Dr Bodi increased the dosage of both.
BANG!!! My kidneys are back to normal!! |

Thank-you for giving me some hope. I'll tell my doc about this! Thanks again.By the way do you follow any other kind of kidney diet, such as low protein and low sodium,or is taking the meds enough?

| | Hi there, I just had a urinalysis done and (as usual I might add) it came back with Proteinurea and blood in the urine.
This is a battle I have been playing my whole life. I had seen a Urologist years ago who wanted to do the dye test... this came out Complete Fail as my veins were too sensitive to the dye and after trying many different parts on my body, I got pissed off and walked away to the changing room, dye dripping from my body... so, results? Who knows.
The doctor was too embarrassed to call for another one and I, by that time, was not too likely to have one done.
Now, to the future we go.... (30 years later) I see my doctor again on the 14th of this month, I already know the results of the test, the nurse told me. The next step will be a 24 hour urine test and then likely back to a Urologist... even though my first try was Fail I will go through it again as with the dx of the D it is vital for me/us to take care of our kidneys.
I am hoping perhaps the testing has changed or that my veins have matured into a more manageable working area, either way, I will do it.
So there are a couple of points to this story, don't be scared by what I related here, that was years ago and second, I have had proteinurea my whole life and it has taken the D to finally make me deal with it.
Good luck to you and please keep us posted, as will I.
Cass
PS I am going to grab some of that cranberry juice or pills while I am out this morning.

PS I am going to grab some of that cranberry juice or pills while I am out this morning. | When you say you had protein/proteinurea/blood in the urine,is that the same as creatinine? I always thought that they come up with what they call a GFR ,according to what the creatinine level is and then that gives you how much function your kidneys have. Do you all know what your "Creatinine" level is or was when your doc decided you didn't have 100% functioning kidneys? I know what mine is. it's 1.14 which gives me a GFR of 52 which is moderate function. You can figure this out on Da Vita website.

| | | i have been on a low protein "diet" for over 24 years now. After 24 years it is really not a "diet" per say rather a life style. I got so used to less than 2 oz of meat per meal that any more than that was just gross. Besides, I have never been a real carnivor! Good Luck! |

| | | Wow, I'm in the same boat, and have not tried the cranberry juice. I love to mix the diet stuff with sprite zero anyway. I just submitted my 24 hour test, no results yet, but now I have some hope! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
